課下多聽錄音帶，反復練習，盡量模仿正確的語音語調。每天堅持讀半個小時的英語。人們常說的「拳不離手，曲不離口」，就是這個道理。
第三，要想學好英語，就得有股子韌勁兒。學過的生詞和句子一定要記住，真正掌握它，千萬別把希望只放在考前的突擊記憶上。期中、期末考試時，成百上千的單詞怎麼能一下子背下來呢?所以，記單詞一定要日積月累，備一個小本兒隨身攜帶就更好。比如今天學了10個單詞，記住了7個，其餘3個怎麼也記不住，這時你就可以把它們記到小本子上。小本子隨身帶，有空你就掏出來，看它幾眼，說它幾遍。看的次數多了，說的次數多了，再難記的單詞也能記住。當然，記生詞最好連句子一塊記效果更好，這樣記得牢。通過句子記新單詞，不但擴大了詞彙量，而且還記了單詞的用法，真是一舉兩得。
第四，要想學好英語，還要多動腦筋。要採用多種方法、多種形式來巧學巧記。
對於一些較難理解的知識，我們可以把它的核心部分用一兩句好記、好上口的話概括起來，進行記憶。比如few和little的用法同學們常常用錯，就可以用以下的話來記憶：「『字母少的』修飾可數名詞;『字母多的』修飾不可數名詞;有a，就有少數幾個，就有一點點;沒a，就幾乎一點兒也沒有了。」
有的則可以用順口溜、警句等來幫助記憶。

這固然不錯，但除此之外，我更覺得，英語是一扇窗口，他向我們展示的是一片廣闊的天地，一派新奇的景象。當我能夠用英語同外國朋友交流，了解國外的社會、歷史、科學和文化，並取得第一手資料時，我才真正的領悟了掌握一種語言的妙處。
學好英語，一套科學的學習方法是必不可少的。由於個人實際情況不同，生搬硬套是行不通的。
但我相信：只要仔細體會，逐漸摸索，人人都可以創造出一套有特色並且行之有效的學習方法。在這里，我想同大家談談我在學習英語過程中的一些體會，以供參考。
盡管在中學時我的英語基礎不錯，但剛跨入大學校門的時候，我還是深深地感到了自己的差距。
要具備一定的聽、說、讀、寫能力，首先要掌握五千到八千詞彙。而作為一個高中畢業生，我當時的詞彙量真是少得可憐。於是，我決定把迅速擴大詞彙量作為主要突破口。
有的同學喜歡背大部頭的詞彙手冊，而我覺得這樣做，既枯燥，又不利於靈活運用。我於是就把著眼點放到了閱讀上，詞彙與閱讀齊頭並進，產生了事半功倍的效果。
為了迅速擴大詞彙量我從一開始就選擇一些當時對我們來說難度偏大的閱讀材料。上千字的文章，通常會有二、三十個生詞。這些文章涉及的范圍很廣，包括了多個領域的詞彙。
我通常採取「兩遍閱讀法」，即第一遍著重訓練閱讀能力，第二遍著重擴大詞彙量並培養語感。起初進行閱讀訓練時，我參考了《Active
Readers》這本書。 首先從提高閱讀速度入手。集中精力閱讀一篇長度適中的文章，記下起止時間，並計算單位時間的閱讀量。迫使自己進行快速閱讀，便成了我的習慣。
在第一遍閱讀過程中，我將重點放在訓練速度，掌握文章大意及基本結構上，並找出問題，以便進一步閱讀時著重解決。
第二遍閱讀的重點有兩個：一是擴大詞彙量。具體做法是：把文章再過一遍，查出生單詞，記到小筆記本上，有時間就拿出來背。
背單詞，我從不利用整時間。當學習別的內容效率較低的時候，對我來說，背單詞最合適。每次背的時間不一定很長，貴在多次反復。
當時我使用的是英漢詞典，因為我覺得英文解釋不便於記憶。而在擴大詞彙量的初期階段了解詞的釋意最為重要。就這樣，隨著閱讀量的增加，面的擴寬，我的詞彙量也就突飛猛進了。
只是到了後來准備TOEFL、GRE等考試時，我才開始背詞彙手冊，並使用英文解釋，以了解詞的確切含義及使用的語言環境。
第二遍閱讀的第二個重點在於培養語感。仔細地體會精彩的語言，留意詞的使用以及搭配，對某些段落我常出聲朗讀，甚至背誦下來。
這樣做，有利於加強語感;為寫作打基礎。通過這種兩遍閱讀法，所讀內容在我頭腦中留下的印象一般都很深刻，而且也提高了閱讀材料的利用率。
我十分重視閱讀材料的選擇。不單從興趣出發，相反，有意識地讀一些自己不甚了解、甚至不大感興趣的科普、歷史、哲學等方面的文章。另外，針對不同的訓練目的，我還選取了內容難度不同的閱讀材料。
例如，進行快速閱讀時，可以選擇生詞量較小、篇幅較短的文章;而重點在擴大詞彙量、拓寬視野的閱讀訓練，就選擇英美報刊雜志。此外，我還注重循序漸進，根據不同階段自己英語水平的變化選擇相應的閱讀材料。
在聽、說、讀、寫四個方面，我從「讀」中受益無窮。通過有意識的大量閱讀、一方面擴大了詞彙量，另一方面培養了語感。而這兩方面我認為是掌握一種語言的兩大支柱。
至於聽、說、寫三個環節，我其實並沒有經過什麼特殊的訓練。讀的東西多了，詞彙量足夠大，語感足夠強，只要多加練習，這三方面的能力也就自然而然的提高了。
在聽、說方面，英文廣播以及原版電影都是極好的傳播媒介。另外，利用一切可能的機會同外國朋友交談，並著力模仿，都頗有成效。至於寫作，在閱讀量還不足的初始階段，我並不急於自己動筆寫，而是學習、模仿一些經典篇章。
《新概念英語》第三冊，還有精讀課本中的一些精彩篇章，我都背過，並常利用早晨的時間大聲朗讀，或者收聽廣播。這樣一來，耳朵里聽到、眼睛裡看到了地道的英語，久而久之，自己也就學會說、學會寫了。
有人問我：怎樣才能在各種英語測試中取得高分。實際上，我並沒有什麼專門的應試對策。在聽、說，讀、寫能力逐步提高的基礎上，只要稍微做一些模擬試題，了解各種測試特點，成績就自然不會壞。

考試方面的學習建議：聽力： 聽力部分是在考試裡面最容易拿分數的部分。最開始的時候，我連聽voa special english都很困難。我的方法是：一個sp要聽4-5次，把裡面不懂的英語單詞的發音，含義全部搞清楚，然後每天堅持2個小時的聽力訓練，狂攻sp。如果沒事，就拿一個MP3吊耳朵，讓自己慢慢習慣英語語境。2個月後，我聽了一盤四級英語考試磁帶，發現自己原來根本聽不明白的東西變的簡單了。所以還是絕對值得的。
2：單詞 這是一個老生常談的話題，大家知道，單詞是英語的礎，沒有單詞，就好象建大廈沒有磚頭，只能幻想空中樓閣。但是被單詞又被大家認為是最難，最枯燥的事情。基礎好的朋友可以通過閱讀學單詞，但是對基礎不好的，這點根本行不通。整篇文章都看不太明白，還談什麼學單詞呢？既然咱們現在水平不行，就要拿出比別人更的努力。我背單詞的草稿紙已經放滿了一個大箱子。 大家肯定有這種經驗，前不久背了的單詞，很快就忘記了，那麼該怎麼辦呢？我當時是每天固定背30-40個左右的單詞，第二天復習前一天的單詞，然後每個禮拜天，花1小時把一個禮拜的單詞復習一下，每一個月又花幾個小時把一個月的單詞復習一次。不懂的單詞全部記下來。3：閱讀 閱讀在我看來，就是通過增加閱讀量，提高閱讀速度，掌握一定的閱讀技巧。 最開始的時候，因為基礎比較差，太難的文章肯定不適合基礎差的朋友。先可以看一些"書蟲"（高中水平）一類的改編小說，練練感覺。當單詞量積累到一定程度以後，就可以正式開始提高閱讀水平了。把題里的句子、單詞都弄明白，並且對其中的難句做一定的分析，特別是語法結構。這里有一個問題：最開始你做題目的時候准確率會很低，千萬別灰心，堅持下去，從每一篇閱讀裡面吸取精華，很快就會發現：閱讀真的沒那麼可怕。

Studies based on instrumental variable techniques suggest that the value of a high schoolecation is large for potential dropouts, yet we know much less about the size of the benefit for students who will go on to post-secondary ecation. To help fill this gap, I measure the value-added of a year of high-school mathematics for university-bound students using a recent Ontario secondary school reform. The subject specificity of this reform makes it possible to identify the benefit of an extra year of mathematics despite the presence of self-selection: one can use subjects unaffected by the reform to control for potential ability differences between control and treatment groups. Further, the richness of the data allows me to generalize the standard difference-in-differences estimator, correcting for heterogeneity in ability measurement across subjects. The estimated value-added to an extra year of mathematics is small for these students – of the order of 17 percent of a standard deviation in university grades. This evidence helps to explain why the literature finds only modest effects of taking more mathematics in high schoolon wages, the small monetary gain being e to a lack of subject-specific human capital accumulation. Within- and between-sample comparisons also suggest that the extra year of mathematics benefits lowerability students more than higher-ability students.
