My hobby is reading. I read story books, magazines, newspapers and any kind of material that I find interesting. This hobby got started when I was a little boy. I had always wanted my parents to read fairy tales and other stories to me. Soon they got fed up and tired of having to read to me continually. So as soon as I could, I learned to read. Soon I could read simple fairy tales and other stories. Now I read just about anything that is available. Reading enables me to learn about so many things that I would otherwise not know. I learned about how people lived in bygone days of magic and mystery. I learned about the wonders of the world, space travel, human achievements, gigantic whales, tiny viruses and other fascinating things of our world. Books provide the reader with so much information and facts. They have certainly helped me in my daily life. I am better equipped to cope with living. Otherwise I would go about ignorantly learning things the hard way. So I continue to read. Besides being more informed about the world, I also spend my time profitably. 學校要要重視培養學生廣泛的閱讀興趣，擴大閱讀面，增加閱讀量，提高閱讀品位。下文是為大家精選的英語名著的閱讀方法，歡迎大家參考借鑒。
我國新一代年輕人愛看中華經典名著的似乎越來越少，愛看英語名著的就更難說了。究其原因，無非以下三種：
[1]沒讀懂：所謂名著，皆是經過一代人或幾代人公認的文學作品，因此時間跨度大，多數名著所寫的都是舊社會的事兒了，與現代生活聯系的不緊密，也就缺少了現代生活的經驗做理解的基礎；另一方面，名著是萬里挑一的文學作品，其創作手法，思想內涵等等皆高人一等，要想把一部名著讀得透徹，確也決非易事。因此，讀起來也就很難懂。
[2]沒意思：名著的是一個時代的縮影。名著之所以稱得上是名著，就是因為它能夠深刻地體現出當時社會的典型現象、真實地記錄社會的方方面面、准確地反映當時的人們的價值追求等等。年輕人都愛向前看，願意探索未知的世界，而不願意向後看，不願意對自己的人生進行深刻的哲學思考。因此，讀起來也就很沒意思。
[3]沒時間：名著篇幅大都很長，通讀一遍就需要耗費掉相當的時間，要想讀懂則需要更多的時間。而另一方面，現代的社會充滿了競爭，似乎每個人天天都有忙不完的事情。因此，把寶貴的時間投到閱讀既沒意思也讀不懂的名著上面去，多數的年輕人會認為不值得，也沒意義。
現在我們來看硬幣的另一面，讀名著（英語名著）的好處：
[1]名著是文學的經典：能夠成為名著的作品首先得經過時間的檢驗，其深刻的內涵能夠引起各代讀者的共鳴，因此而成為名著。從這個角度看，瓊瑤的作品不是名著，木子美的作品也不是名著。也就是，名著雖然看起來記述的是過去了的某個時代的事，但它所要表達的思想則不受時代的限制，對現代人同樣具有深刻的指導意義。
[2]名著是文化的結晶：我們談人生，多半會源引孔子、老子、莊子等名著中的名言，因為中華的千古文化的根就扎在這些名著里；同樣，英語名著自然是歐美國家的文化結晶，我們透過英語名著能夠對歐美文化有更深的體會與理解，英語名著讀得越多，對現代歐美人的為人處事觀念認識得也就越深刻，在他們旁引博證時我們也就能泰然處之。
[3]名著是歷史的寫照：名著得到各時代人的推崇，自然說明各時代的人都能讀得懂。那麼我們為什麼讀不懂呢？因為名著所記錄的現實對我們而言多半已是很遙遠的事了。我們不是作品問世時代的讀者，因時空的限制而難於理解原作者想傳達的內容及思想，而外語名著又加了一層詞彙的限制，就更易讓人望而卻步了。但這並不是說名著根本就無法讀得懂，只不過需要採用一些正確的閱讀方法而已。
態度決定一切，這是我覺得大家在開始閱讀英語原著之前應有的一種基本認識。如果你做不到這些最起碼的認識，那麼你讀起來就不會快樂，也就沒什麼意義可言，就不如不讀。
如果你的心態調整好了，就嘗試一下用下面的方法來閱讀你的第一本英語原著。
[1]從簡寫本起步（註：於成年人來說，簡寫本過於枯燥，損失了原著太多的韻味，可以選簡單的原著，可選擇的很多，兒童文學或者young alt的都很好看。）
英語原著由於篇幅長而詞彙量大，由於是文學作品而文字生僻者多。因此，在詞彙量不足的情況下不要冒然進行英語原著閱讀。而應當從名著的英語簡寫本著手，可以先挑一本牛津書蟲系列讀物或者新課標分級讀物等。對於大家目前的英語水平而言，應當是沒什麼問題。剛開始讀這樣簡易讀物時，你會感覺這些讀物並不簡易，有相當一部分詞彙你不認得，讀起來總是似懂非懂的。等你讀完三兩本以後，通常你就會很有自信心了，讀得也越來越快，越來越明白。等你讀完七八本時，無論是在詞彙上、速度上還是理解上，你都不會再有什麼問題。當你的閱讀量超過了十本時，你會開始有一種喝白開水的感覺，故事情節不錯就是看著不過癮，有了這種感覺就意味著你的詞彙量及語法知識體系已經超出了英語簡寫本的范圍，你已經不再是簡寫本的目標讀者，你該換書了。另外，在讀簡寫本期間，你要留意一下你對哪個名著所寫的內容感興趣，因為當你沖過了簡寫本閱讀階段之後，你要挑選的名著最好就是你曾讀過其簡寫本的且你特感興趣的那一部。
[2]英語原著的挑選：
挑選原著時首先要以興趣為出發點，即選擇你喜歡的'內容來讀。其次，要做一下試讀工作。比方說，你可以選試讀第一章，看自己能不能應付得來。頭一次讀英語原著的人大都會有天旋地轉的感覺，因此最好能以一整章為試讀內容，讀完這一章後再反思一下，是不是可以讀下去。
[3]英語原著的閱讀過程：
正式開始閱讀英語原著時應做的第一件事情是進行整體閱讀，即不看正文，而是看看全書的封面封底，書名與作者，然後是目錄，作者序等等。第二件事情則是解決時代隔閡問題，即找到作者的背景資料（最好是漢語的）及本書的創作背景、內容介紹、寫作風格、故事主題等等。這兩件事情是進行原著閱讀必須做到的先期工作。完成了這些先期工作，你便可以開始你的原文閱讀了。在整個閱讀過程中，要隨時臨控自己的閱讀進程，不能隨心所欲；一方面要合理安排閱讀時間及閱讀量，另一方面要時時作閱讀記錄，反思自己在閱讀中碰到的問題及汲取的經驗等等。
[4]英語原著的閱讀注意事項：
（1）可以使用該原著的漢譯本做原著的輔助讀物，但不可以進行英漢對照式的閱讀。讀英語版本時不要看漢語的，讀漢語時就不要看英語的。你可以先讀一遍漢語版然後再讀一遍英語版，或者反過來。我喜歡簡愛一書，漢語版的看了五遍，英語版的看了兩遍。
（2）可以使用詞典，但不可以逢詞必查。沒有詞典的幫助閱讀則顯得非常的困難，因此，幾乎所有人都希望能夠藉助詞典來幫助理解原文，呵呵，那樣的話，看漢語版的不就得了？！記住，我們讀原著是為了讀它的意思，不是讀它的詞彙，更不是為了積累詞彙、學習英語。只有你把心思用在意義的解讀上時，你才能擺脫詞彙量的束縛，才會知道哪些詞該查，哪些詞不該查，哪些地方該詳細地看，哪些地方該跳過去；也只有你在拋開了積累詞彙學習英語等基本想法之後，你才能夠做到詞彙的高度積累，語法體系的高度完善，英語水平的高度發展。
（3）可以淺嘗則止，但不可以半途而廢。一旦你開始了英語原著的閱讀，就不要輕言放棄，哪怕是你整部書讀得一點兒也不理想，什麼都沒學到（其實讀完第一本原著的人通常都是這種感覺）。我不知道我到底讀過多少本小說，我給大家開列的這五十五部英語原著小說，要說簡寫本我差不多都讀過了，要說原著我倒沒有讀過那麼多，應該有十四五本吧。可是到現在我還是有著當時每讀過一本原著的那種強烈感覺：除了能記住幾個人名及精彩故事情節以外，啥都沒學到。閱讀就是這樣，在你感到啥都沒學到的時候，許多知識都潛移默化地進入了你的腦海，唯一能夠證明這種變化的可能是某次正規的英語測試你成績出奇的好，或者是你的同學對你連那麼孤僻的詞都認得而感到詫異。

He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy's parents had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his skiff empty and he always went down to help him carry either the coiled lines or the gaff and harpoon and the sail that was furled around the mast. The sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat.

The successful fishermen of that day were already in and had butchered their marlin out and carried them laid full length across two planks, with two men staggering at the end of each plank, to the fish house where they waited for the ice truck to carry them to the market in Havana. Those who had caught sharks had taken them to the shark factory on the other side of the cove where they were hoisted on a block and tackle, their livers removed, their fins cut off and their hides skinned out and their flesh cut into strips for salting.

When the wind was in the east a smell came across the harbour from the shark factory, but today there was only the faint edge of the odour because the wind had backed into the north and then dropped off and it was pleasant and sunny on the Terrace.
