adventurers

There have never been many adventurers. You van read stories about men called adventures. But they were really businessmen. There was something they wanted----- a lady, or money, or a country, or honor. And so they got it. But a true adventure is different. He starts without any special purpose. He is ready for anything he may meet.

There have been many half-adventurers. And they were great men. History is rich with their stories. But each of them had a special purpose. They were not followers of true adventure.

In the big city of New York, Romance and Adventure are always waiting.

As we walk along the street, they are watching us. We look up suddenly and see a face in a window. The face seems to interest us strangely. Or in a quiet street, we hear a cry of fear and pain coming from a house where no one lives. A car takes us to a strange door, instead of to our own. The door opens and we are asked to enter. At every corner, eyes look toward us, or hands are raised, or fingers point. Adventure is offered.

But few of us are ready to accept. We are ready to do only the things we do every day. We wish to do only the things that everyone else does. We move on; and some day we come to the end of a long quiet life. Then we begin to think. Then, when it is too late, we are sorry that we have never known true Romance and Adventure.

1. In the author’s opinion, there are ____ true adventures.

A. many B. few C. no D. a few

2. In what way does the author say a true adventure is different from a business man?

A. He is ready for anything he may meet.

B. He is not interested in money.

C. He enjoys excitement while a business man does not.

D. A true adventure is romantic, while a businessman is ll.

3. According to the passage, a cry of fear and pain coming from a house where no one lives in a quiet street means____.

A. a number B. a fight C. wealth D. adventure

4. The passage doesn’t mention it, but we can infer from the passage that when most people meet an offer of adventure, they will ____.

A. grow angry but curious

B. accept the offer

C. grow embarrassed and reject the offer

D. be frightened and cry for help.

5. When do most people wish that they had known romance and adventure?

A. When they are young.

B. When it involves a beautiful lady or handsome man.

C. When something interests them strangely.

D. When they reach the end of a long quiet life.

the world

Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Of course, there have always been people who have looked for adventures ----those who have climbed the highest mountains, traveled into unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans. Now, however, there are people who look for an immediate excitement from a risky activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.

I would consider bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place (perhaps a bridge or a hot-air balloon) 200 metres above the ground with an elastic (有彈性的) rope tied to your ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometres an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is said that about 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping. Other activities which most people would say are as risky as bungee jumping include jumping from tall building and diving into the sea from the top of high cliff.(懸崖)

Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring. Not very long ago, diseases could not easily be cured, and life was a continuous battle for survival.(生存).

Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in comparatively safe conditions; they buy food in shops; and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as bungee jumping.

1. A best title for the text is ____.

A. Dangerous sports: what and why

B. The boredom of modern life

C. Bungee jumping: Is it really dangerous?

D. The need for excitement

2. More and more people today ____.

A. are trying activities such as bungee jumping

B. are climbing the highest mountains

C. are coming close to death in sports

D. are looking for adventures such as traveling into unknown places

3. In bungee jumping, you ____.

A. jump as high as you can

B. slide down a rope to the ground

C. attach(系) yourself to a rope and fall to the ground

D. fall towards the ground without a rope

4. People probably take part in dangerous sports nowadays because _____.

A. they have a lot of free time

B. they can go to hospital if they are injured

C. their life is short of excitement

D. they no longer need to hunt for food

5. The writer of the text has a ____ attitude towards dangerous sports.

A. Positive(肯定的') B. negative(否定的) C. neutral(中立的) D. nervous(緊張的)

第一篇:

Our brains work in complex and strange ways. There are some people who can calculate the day of the week for any given date in 40,000 years, but who cannot add two plus two.Others can perform complex classical piano pieces after hearing them once, but they cannot read or write.

Dr.J.Langdon Down first described this condition in 1887.He called these people idiot savants. An idiot savant is a person who has significant mental impairment (損傷) , such as in autism ( 孤獨症,自閉症) or retardation. At the same time, the person also exhibits some extraordinary skills, which are unusual for most people. The skills of the savant may vary from being exceptionally gifted in music or in mathematics, or having a photographic memory.

One of the first descriptions of a human who could calculate quickly was written in 1789 by Dr.Benjamin Rush, an American doctor. His patient, Thomas Fuller, was brought to Virginia as a slave in1724.It took Thomas only 90 seconds to work out that a man who has lived 70 years, 17 days, and 12 hours has lived 2,210,500,800 seconds.Despite this ability, he died in 1790 without ever learning to read or write.

Another idiot savant slave became famous as a pianist in the 1860s.Blind Tom had a vocabulary of only 100 words, but he played 5 ,000 musical pieces beautifully.

In the excellent movie Rain Man, made in 1988 and available on video cassette, Dustin Hoffman plays an idiot savant who amazes his brother played by Tom Cruise, with his ability to perform complex calculations very rapidly.

Today we more clearly recognize that the idiot savant is special because of brain impairment.Yet not all brain impairment leads to savant skills. Some studies have shown that people who have purposeful interruption of the left side of the brain can develop idiot savant skills. However few people wish to participate in such experiments. There are many excellent reasons for not undergoing unnecessary experimentation on one's brain. The term idiot savant is outdated and inappropriate.Virtually all savants have a high degree of intelligence and are thus not idiots.

72.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Idiot savants have areas of outstanding abilities.

B.Human Beings have complicated thinking process.

C.The brains of the idiot savants are partly impaired.

D.The reasons why people have wonderful skills vary.

73.Which of the following can be done by Rain Man?

A.He can play wonderful pieces of classical music.

B.He can guess out exactly the length of a man's life.

C.He can memorize the contents of the pictures fast.

D.He can count matches dropped on the floor quickly.

74.What can you infer from the passage?

A.Idiot savants have real talents for art and math.

B.Dr.Down is the first person who found idiot savants.

C.Few people wish to risk becoming savants by brain operations.

D.Intentional left brain impairments will surely lead to idiot savants.

75.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

第二篇:

Laws that would have ensured pupils from five to 16 received a full financial ecation got lost in the ‘wash up’. An application is calling on the next government to bring it back.

At school the children are taught to add up and subtract(減法) but, extraordinarily, are not routinely shown how to open a bank account — let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world.

Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial ecation a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from five to 16 should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the Children, Schools and Families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called “wash-up” earlier this month — the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed. Consumer and parent groups believe financial ecation has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum.

As the Personal Finance Ecation Group (Pfeg) points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven- to 11-year-olds are savers but by the time they get to 17, over half of them are in debt to family and friends. By this age, 26% see a credit card or overdraft(透支) as a way of extending their spending power. Pfeg predicts that these young people will “find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befallen many of their parents' generation unless they receive good quality financial ecation while at school.”

The UK has been in the worst financial recession(衰退)for generations. It does seem odd that — unless parents step in — young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial ecation in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.

61. The passage is mainly about _____________.

A. how to manage school lessons

B. how to deal with the financial crisis

C. teaching young people about money

D. teaching students how to study effectively

62. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that __________.

A. the author complains about the school ecation

B. pupils should not be taught to add up and subtract

C. students have been taught to manage their finances

D. laws on financial ecation have been effectively carried out

63. The website and the consumer campaigner joined to _________.

A. instruct the pupils to donate their pocket money

B. promote the connection of schools and families

C. ask the government to dismiss the parliament

D. appeal for the curriculum of financial ecation

64. According to Pfeg, ___________.

A. it is easy to keep good habits long

B. teenagers spend their money as planned

C. parents are willing to pay the debt for their kids

D. it will be in trouble if the teenagers are left alone

65. A poll is mentioned to ___________.

A. stress the necessity of the curriculum reform

B. show the seriousness of the financial recession

C. make the readers aware of burden of the parents

D. illustrate some people are strongly against the proposal

There is a definite possibility that the climate of the world may be changing. Some scientists imagine that this could even mean the beginning of another ice age. The effects of such a change in climate on the human population of the world would be startling(驚人的).

Recent research suggests that the general warming tend of the past hundred years or so may be coming to an end. During the past ten years, meteorologists tell us the average temperature of the earth has dropped about one degree Fahrenheit. This does not seem like much, but it could have effects on wind and rain patterns which influence the overall weather picture. If these patterns change a lot, it could mean that certain regions of the world may continue to have long droughts while others will possibly suffer from widespread flooding.

What regulates(調節)the climate is not exactly known. Meteorologists believe that clouds may be an important factor in regulating the amount of solar(太陽的)heat held by the earth, which in turn determines he temperature of the planet. Another possibility is that man』s instrial and agricultural methods may be affecting the natural weather patterns. However, the weather is not understood well enough for scientists to say for certain what is happening to the climate and what side effects this will actually have on the word』s population.

The shark had surfaced so quietly that he hadn』t heard a thing.

In his horror and confusion, he waved his arms and accidentally cut tow of his fingers on the shark』s teeth. He then slid off the opposite side of his surfboard into the water. Then, with Craig in the water and blood flowing from his fingers, the five-meter-long shark simply swam away, disappearing into the water below.

Although sharks are often categorized as killers that hunt and eat as many humans as then can, this is factually inaccurate. Sharks very rarely kill humans, Aperson has a greater chance of being struck by lightning or drowning in a bath than of being killed by a shark. Only 74 people have been reported killed by great whites in the last century. But great white sharks can reach six meters in length and weigh 2200 kilograms or more. With frightening jaws that can hold up to 3000 teeth arranged in several rows, they could very easily kill and eat a helpless human in the water. Why is it, then, that most people survive attacks by great whites? Shark researchers are trying to comprehend the reasons that allow people to escape without being eaten.

The most common explanation is that great whites don』t see well. It has been thought that they mistake people for the seals or sea lions which make up a large part of their diet. There is reason to doubt this, however. Recent information shows that great whites can actually see very well. Also, when accacking seals, great whites shoop up to the surface and bite with great force. When approaching humans, however, they most often move in slowly and bite less hard. They soon discover that humans are not a high-fat meal.」 They spit us out because we』re too bony,」 says Aidan Martin, director of Reef Quest Center for Shark Research.

Shark researchers like Martin hypothesize that great whites are actually curious animals that like to investigate things. It』s possible that they use their bite not only to kill and eat, but also to gather information, Although such an experience is unlucky for people like Craig Rogers, when sharks bite surfboards or other objects or people, they are likely just trying to learn what they are.

Marvin Minsky is often called the Father of Artificial Intelligence. His work helped inspire the creation of the personal computer and the Internet.

Artificial Intelligence

Before Minsky, computers were more like calculators, performing math operations at speeds much faster than humans. Minsky was the first to say that computers can one day be as intelligent as human beings. He was so convinced about this, that in 1959, he and his friend John McCarthy invented the term 「Artificial Intelligence」 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Minsky wrote a book called Perceptrons, describing a particular type of 「artificial neural(神經的) network」. Neural networks have made a comeback in a new field of Computer Science called Deep Learning. Deep Learning is used to recognize things and people in pictures , language translation( try Google Translate sometimes), and so on.

Robotics, Microscopes and Virtual Reality

How many of you have done Robotics at school and loved it? You have Minsky to thank again, for his work on Robotics. One of his biggest inventions was the confocal scanning microscope, an instrument that is still widely used today in medical and scientific research.

Minsky was really futuristic. He created one of the first head-mounted graphics displays(頭戴式圖形顯示), which gave rise to the exciting area of Virtual Reality.

Minsky』s major prediction that computers will one day become as intelligent as humans is now called the Theory of Singularity.
