過去式句型是把實意動詞或助動詞的原形變為過去式來表達意義的形式。

如：「do」變為「did」，「are」變為「were」，「go」變為「went」，「work」變為「worked」，「ask」變為「asked」，等等。除了少數不規則動詞要單獨記各自的特殊形式之外，絕大多數動詞的過去式是以動詞原形加上後綴「ed」構成。例如：

I did some homework after school.（放學後我做了作業。）
Were you also at the cinema yesterday？（你昨天也去看電影了嗎？）
My parents went out quickly without breakfast.（我父母沒吃早餐就急急忙忙地出門了。）

上述例子中，除了最後一句里的「did」為助動詞外，其他各句里的動詞均為實意動詞。
