One of my patients, a successful busines *** an, tells me that before his cancer he would bee depressed unless things went a certain way. Happiness was "having the cookie." If you had the cookie, things were good.

If you didn't have the cookie, life wasn't worth a damn. Unfortunately, the cookie kept changing.

Some of the time it was money, sometimes power, sometimes sex. At other times, it was the new car, the biggest contract, the most prestigious address.

A year and a half after his diagnosis of prostate cancer he sits shaking his head ruefully. "It's like I stopped learning how to live after I was a kid.

When I give my son a cookie, he is happy. If I take the cookie away or it breaks, he is unhappy.

But he is two and a half and I am forty-three. It's taken me this long to understand that the cookie will never make me happy for long.

The minute you have the cookie it starts to crumble or you start to worry about it crumbling or about someone trying to take it away from you.

You know, you have to give up a lot of things to take care of the cookie, to keep it from crumbling and be sure that no one takes it away from you.

You may not even get a chance to eat it because you are so busy just trying not to lose it.

Having the cookie is not what life is about." My patient laughs and says cancer has changed him.

For the first time he is happy. No matter if his business is doing well or not, no matter if he wins or loses at golf. "

Two years ago, cancer asked me, 'Okay, what's important? What is really important?' Well, life is important.

Life. Life any way you can have it, life with the cookie, life without the cookie. Happiness does not have anything to do with the cookie; it has to do with being alive. Before, who made the time?" He pauses thoughtfully. "Damn, I guess life is the cookie."

How wonderful are islands! Islands in space, like this one I have e to, ringed about by milesof water, linked by on bridges, no cables, no telephones.

An lsland from the world and the world's life. Islands is time, like this short vacation of mine.

The past and the future are cut off: only the present remains.

One lives like a child or a saint in the immediacy of here and now.

Every day, every act, is an island, washed by time and space, and has an island's pletion.

People, too, bee like islands in such an atmosphere, self-contained, whole and serene;respecting other people's solitude, not intruding on their shores, standing back in reverncebefore the miracle of another indivial.

"No man is an island," said John Donne. I feel we are all islands--in a mon sea.

We are all, in the last *** ysis, alone.

And this basic state of solitude is not something we have any choice about.

It is , as the poet Rilke says, "not something that one can take or leave".

We are solitary. We may delude ourselves and act as though this were not so, yes, even tobegin by assuming it."Naturally," he goes on to say,"we will turn giddy."

We seem so frightened today of being alone that we never let it happen. Even if family, friends, and movies should fail, there is still the radio or television to fill up the void.

Women, who used to plain of loneliness, need never be alone any more.

We can do our housework with soap-opera heroes at our side. Even day-dreaming was morecreative than this; it demanded something of oneself and it fed the inner life.

Now instead of planting our solitude with our dream bolssoms, we choke the space withcontinuous music, chatter and panionship to which we do not even listen.

It is simply there to fill the vacuum. When the noise stops there is no inner music to take itsplace. We must relearn to be alone.

Years of storms had taken their toll on the old windmill. Its wheel, rusted and fallen, lay silent in the lush bluegrass. Its once animated silhouette was now a tall motionless steeple in the twilight sun.

I hadn『t walked across our old farm in fifteen years. Yet the sensations came flooding back. I could *** ell the freshness of new mown alfalfa. I could feel the ping of the ice cold summer rain, and the sun『s sudden warmth on my wet shoulders when it reappeared after a brisk July thunderstorm.

Rain or shine, I used to walk this path each day to see Greta. She always made me *** ile, even after Sis and I had just had a big squabble. I would help Greta with her chores. Then we would visit over a generous helping of her delicious homemade chocolate cookies and ice cream. Being confined to a wheel chair didn『t stop Greta from being a fabulous cook.

Greta gave me two of the greatest gifts I『ve ever received. First, she taught me how to read. She also taught me that when I forgave Sis for our squabbles, it meant I wouldn『t keep feeling like a victim. Instead, I would feel sunny.

Mr. Dinking, the local banker, tried to foreclose on Greta『s house and land after her hu *** and passed away. Thanks to Pa and Uncle Johan, Greta got to keep everything. Pa said that it was the least he could do for someone talented enough to teach me to read!

Soon folks were ing from miles around to buy Greta『s homemade cakes, pies, breads, cookies, cider, and ice cream. Hank, the grocery store man, came each week to stock his shelves and bring Greta supplies.

Greta even had me take a big apple pie to Mr. Dinking who became one of her best customers and friends. That『s just how Greta was. She could turn anyone into a friend!

Greta always said, "Dear, keep walking in sunshine!" No matter how terrible my day started, I always felt sunny walking home from Greta『s house-even beneath the winter starlight.

I arrived at Greta『s house today just after sunset. An ambulance had stopped a few feet from her door, it『s red lights flashing. When I ran into the old house, Greta recognized me right away.

She *** iled at me with her unforgettable twinkling blue eyes. She was almost out of breath when she reached out and softly touched my arm. Her last words to me were "Dear, keep walking in sunshine!"

I『m sure that Greta is walking in the brightest sunshine she『s ever seen. And, I『m sure that she heard every word I read at her memorial service.

I chose a beautiful verse by Leo Buscaglia. It『s one that Greta taught me to read many years ago…

"Love can never grow old. Locks may lose their brown and gold. Cheeks may fade and hollow grow. But the hearts that love will know, never winter『s frost and chill, summer『s warmth is in them still."

"Oh, I made a mistake," said the man. "He is blind in the left eye." Washington then took his hand from the left eye of the horse.

It was not blind in the left eye, either. "

I made another mistake," said the neighbour.

"Yes," said the policeman, " and you know the horse is not yours.

You must give it back to Washington."

99.Asking the Way 問路

Mike is traveling around the country in his car.

One evening he is driving along a road and looking for a small hotel.

Then he sees an old man at the side of the road.

He stops his car and says to the old man, " I want to go to the Sun Hotel. Do you know it?"

"Yes, " the old man says."

"I'll show you the way." He gets into Mike's car, and they drive off.

They drive for about twelve miles.

When they come to a small house, the old man says, " Stop here."

Mike stops and looks at the house.

"But this isn't a hotel," he says to the old man.

No, " the old man answers. "This is my house. 「

And now I'll show you the way to the Sun Hotel.

Turn around and go back nine miles. Then you'll see the hotel on the left."

100.The North Wind and the Sun

The north wind and the sun are good friends.

But one day they quarrel about something.

"I am stronger than you, " the cold north wind says. 「

"Indeed you are not. I'm stronger than you," answers the soft, warm sun. 「

Just then they see a man walking along the road.

" I can get that man's hat off his head, " the wind says. 「

"I can get that man's hat off his head, too," answers the sun. 「

" Then let's see who can get the man's hat off his head," says the wind. 「

"The one who can do that first is stronger." 「

"OK! You try it first," says the soft, warm sun. 「

"All right!" So the north wind begins to blow. 「

But the harder the wind blows, the tighter the man holds his hat and coat.

The wind can't make him take them off.

"It is my turn now," the sun says. So the sun comes out and shines down warmly upon the man.

The man feels hot. He takes off his hat firs, and then even his coat.

"That's enough! You are stronger than I," the wind says. 「

Sun: Hello, I』m the sun. I』m strong. I give light to the earth. I』m No.1.

Moon: Hello, I』m the moon. At night Give light to the earth. I』m stronger. I』m No.1

Sun: Your light is from me, isn』t it?

Cloud: Don』t quarrel. When I am over the earth, you can』t give light to the earth. So everyone has his strong point. We are one family.

Sun Moon: Yes, you』re right. We are one family. We should help each other and take care of each other.

( )1. The sun gives light to the earth at night.

( )2.The moon gives light to the earth at night.

( )3. The sun』s light is not from the earth.

( )4. When the cloud is over the earth, the sun can give light to the earth, too.

( )5. They should help each other.

The sun gives light to the earth.

The Habits of the Solitary

My bones have been aching again,as they often do in humid weather.

They ache like history:things long done with, that still remain as pain.

When the ache is bad enough it keeps me from sleeping.

Every night I yearn for sleep,I strive for it;

yet it flutters on ahead of me like a curtain.

There are sleeping pills, of course, but the doctor has warned me against them.

Last night, after what seemed hours of damp turmoil,I got up and crept slipperless down the stairs, feeling my way in the faint street light that came through the window.

Once safely arrived at the bottom,I walked into the kitchen and looked around in the refrigerator.

There was nothing much I wanted to eat:the remains of a bunch of celery,a blue-tinged heel of bread,a lemon going soft.

I've fallen into the habits of the solitary;my meals are snatched and random.

Furtive snacks, furtive treats and picnics.

I made do with some peanut butter, scooped directly from the jar with a forefinger:why dirty a spoon?

Standing there with the jar in one hand and my finger in my mouth,I had the feeling that someone was about to walk into the room—some other woman, the unseen, valid owner—and ask me what in hell I was doing in her kitchen.

I've had it before, the sense that even in the course of my most legitimate and daily actions—peeling a banana, brushing my teeth—I am trespassing.

At night the house was more than ever like a stranger's.

I wandered through the front room, the dining room, the parlour, hand on the wall for balance.

My various possessions were floating in their own pools of shadow, denying my ownership of them.

I looked them over with a burglar's eye, deciding what might be worth the risk of stealing, what on the other hand I would leave behind.

Robbers would take the obvious things—the silver teapot that was my grandmother's,perhaps the hand-painted china. The television set.

Nothing I really want.

Loneliness is not just confined to the elderly. There is the loneliness of the adolescent, especially if they come from a troubled home, or are finding it difficult to make friends atschool. There is the terrible loneliness of bereavement. Someone suddenly finding no one thereafter years together with a partner. There is the loneliness of a person critically ill in hospital, cut off from the life they have known and fearful about the future. Then there are some peoplewho have always felt alone like the poet R.S.Thomas. He wrote some lovely poems to his wife of50 years but when she died and he was asked if he was now lonely he replied “Isn’t one lonelywithin marriage”?

So many forms of loneliness but we cannot ignore the fact that we are most of us are livinglonger now and there are an increasing number of elderly living on their own who do not seeanyone from one week’s end to another-not just women, for a recent study said that morethan a million men over the age of 50 suffer from a sense of isolation. I find it very poignantwhen I go through my address system on the computer and have to delete a name. Somepeople reach the stage when the names of all their friends have been deleted. Overall some 10%of people over the age of 65 say they are lonely most or all of the time. All this is intensified atthis time of the year. Priests know that Christmas can be tinged with some heart rendingconversations about the pain of loneliness

Existentialists used to stress that as human beings it is our lot to be fundamentally alone. There is no escape, and certainly this tendency has been reinforced by the rampantindivialism that has dominated European thought and life for 3 centuries. But I prefer theAfrican notion of Ubuntu, that life is essentially interpersonal. We become and remain personsin and through our relation to other persons. Hence those great words addressed to Adam inthe Garden of Eden “It is not good for man to be alone.”

Mother Theresa who did so much for the destitute poor on the streets of Calcutta once said“Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.” Charities andvoluntary organisations do much to help overcome this. Even if we have not able to volunteerourselves we can I think all do more to connect with other people, a phone call, a visit, agreeting in the street, a smile across the counter. For we belong together and it is not goodfor man-or woman-to be alone.

Although Chinese people have graally become wealthy more or less e to the reform andopening-up policy, they have oftentimes been troubled by a lack of friends that they can takeinto their confidence. Thisobservation manifests itself most vividly in a line cited from themovie. If You Are the One,that is,“Ido not lack money but friends”.Ironically,in the cellphone contact list of an average person, the number of cell phone numbers may reach acouple of hundreds. One can not help wondering if modern people become lonelier thanbefore.Personally,I hold the opinion that modern people do become lonelier than before.

Firstly,e to the urbanizing process at an unprecedented speed, the society became moremobile, for more and more people migrate from one city to another to seekfortune.Nowadays people in cities are consisted of migrate workers from rural areas, collegegraates in pursuit of their dreams, businessmen across the country and the local. Giventhe fact that people from different regions have different subcultures, people tend to rejectpeople with different backgrounds.Besides,as people are more interested in making money, they are more likely to conflict in interest. No wonder that circle of confidants has shrunkdramatically and the number of people with whom to discuss important matters has spirallyincreased.

Secondly, while people are able to benefit from the advancement of new technologies, theyare likely to depend more upon technologies instead of friends. Communication technologiessuch as the Internet and phones let people stay in contact with other people who are fromremote areas, and spend time on the phone and the Internet communications instead ofdealing with people face to face. Network games have gained their popularity to such anextent that many spend most of their spare time in playing network games and hencetheybecome apathetic to have a good time with friends face to face. That face time seems morelikely to develop friendships.

As a result, the reced face time would translate into a loose network between friends.Insum, urbanization has reced the intimacy between human beings and makes them less likelyto make friends than in the past and the advancement of modern technology also makes peoplemore apathetic by recing face-to-face contact with friends.I hope people can regain theintimacy between friends as before.

panionship of Books

A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the pany he keeps; for there is a panionship of books as well as of men; and one should always live in the best pany, whether it be of books or of men.

A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of panions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness; amusing and instructing us in youth, and forting and consoling us in age.

Men often discover their affinity to each other by the mutual love they have for a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. There is an old proverb, 『Love me, love my dog.」 But there is more wisdom in this:」 Love me, love my book.」 The book is a truer and higher bond of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them.

A good book is often the best urn of a life enshrining the best that life could think out; for the world of a man』s life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, bee our constant panions and forters.

Books possess an essence of immortality. They are by far the most lasting procts of human effort. Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author』s minds, ages ago. What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page. The only effect of time have been to sift out the bad procts; for nothing in literature can long survive e but what is really good.

Books introce us into the best society; they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; we see the as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them; their experience bees ours, and we feel as if we were in a measure actors with them in the scenes which they describe.

The great and good do not die, even in this world. Embalmed in books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect to which on still listens.

Joy in living es from having fine emotions, trusting them, giving them the freedom of a bird in the open. Joy in living can never be assumed as a pose, or put on from the outside as a mask. People who have this joy do not need to talk about it; they radiate it. They just live out their joy and let it splash its sunlight and glow into other lives as naturally as bird sings.

We can never get it by working for it directly. It es, like happiness, to those who are aiming at something higher. It is a byproct of great, simple living. The joy of living es from what we put into living, not from what we seek to get from it.

I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in pany, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. I never found the panion that was so panionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers. A man thinking or working is always alone, let him be where he will. Solitude is not measured by the miles of space that intervene between a man and his fellows. The really diligent student in one of the crowded hives of Cambridge College is as solitary as a dervish in the desert. The farmer can work alone in the field or the woods all day, hoeing or chopping, and not feel lonesome, because he is employed; but when he es home at night he cannot sit down in a room alone, at the mercy of his thoughts, but must be where he can :see the folks,:" and recreate, and, as he thinks, remunerate himself for his day's solitude; and hence he wonders how the student can sit alone in the house all night and most of the day without ennui and :the blues:; but he does not realize that the student, though in the house, is still at work in his field, and chopping in his woods, as the farmer in his, and in turn seeks the same recreation and society that the latter does, though it may be a more condensed form of it.

Society is monly too cheap. We meet at very short intervals, not having had time to acquire any new value for each other. We meet at meals three times a day, and give each other a new taste of that old musty cheese that we are. We have had to agree on a certain set of rules, called etiquette and politeness, to make this frequent meeting tolerable and that we need not e to open war. We meet at the post-office, and at the sociable, and about the fireside every night; we live thick and are in each other's way, and stumble over one another, and I think that we thus lose some respect for one another. Certainly less frequency would suffice for all important and hearty munications. Consider the girls in a factory---never alone, hardly in their dreams. It would be better if there were but one inhabitant to a square mile, as where I live. The value of a man is not in his skin, that we should touch him.

I have a great deal of pany in my house; especially in the morning, when nobody calls. Let me suggest a few parisons, that some one may convey an idea of my situation. I am no more lonely than the loon in the pond that laughs so loud, or than Walden Pond itself. What pany has that lonely lake, I pray?

And yet it has not the blue devils, but the blue angels in it, in the azure tint of its waters. The sun is alone, except in thick weather, when there sometimes appear to be two, but one is a mock sun. god is alone---but the devil, he is far from being alone; he sees a great deal of pany; he is legion. I am no more lonely than a single mullein or dandelion in a pasture, or a bean leaf, or sorrel, or a horse-fly, or a bumblebee. I am no more lonely than the Millbrook, or a weathercock, or the north star, or the south wind, or an April shower, or a January thaw, or the first spider in a new house.
