The Best of Friends

The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image(形象)of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels.

An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past.“We were surprised by just how positive today’s young people seem to be about their families,” said one member of the research team. “They’re expected to be rebellious(叛逆的)and selfish, but actually they have other things on their minds: they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There’s more negotiation(商議)and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat.”

So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends.“My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me," says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. “I always tell them when I’m going out clubbing. As long as they know what I’m doing, they’re fine with it.” Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. “Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as I’d done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.”

Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenage rebellion is not rooted in real facts. A researcher comments,“Our surprise that teenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief period in our social history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened ring that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been a smooth change from helping out with the family business to taking it over.”

67. What is the popular image of teenagers today? A. They worry about school.

B. They dislike living with their parents. C, They have to be locked in to avoid troubles. D. They quarrel a lot with other family members.

68. The study shows that teenagers don’t want to__________ . A. share family responsibility B. cause trouble in their families C. go boating with their family D. make family decisions

69. Compared with parents of 30 years ago, today’s parents__________ . A. go to clubs more often with their children B. are much stricter with their children

C. care less about their children’s life D. give their children more freedom 70. According to the author, teenage rebellion__________ . A. may be a false belief B. is common nowadays

C. existed only in the 1960s D. resulted from changes in families

71. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Negotiation in family. B. Ecation in family. C. Harmony in family. D. Teenage trouble in family.

答案與解析:

67. D解析:這是一道細節判斷題。根據第一段“which is the opposite of the popularly-held image of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels.”可知(青少年)流行的形象是和父母無休止爭吵完後把自己鎖在屋子裡,所以給人的印象是常常和其他家庭成員爭吵。

68. B解析:這是一道細節判斷題。根據第二段最後一句“They don’t want to rock the boat.”可知孩子們不想製造麻煩。“rock the boat”是搗亂、製造麻煩的意思。

69. D解析:這是一道細節判斷題。根據第三段第一句“So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends.”和Susan Crome的描述“Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation.”可知這一代的父母比起30年前上一代的'父母更善於把孩子當成朋友看待,Susan說有很多事情都可以和她父母商量。也就是說這一代父母給孩子更多自由。

70. A解析:這是一道歸納題。根據最後一段第二句“It is possible that the idea of teenage rebellion is not rooted in real facts.”

cultural

Not everyone in the world requires the same amount of living space. The amount of space a person needs around him is a cultural difference, not an economic one. Knowing your own psychological (心理的) space needs is important because they strongly affect your choices, including, for example, the number of bedrooms in the home. If you were brought up in a two-child family and both you and your sister or brother had your own bedrooms, the chances are,if you have two children or more, that you also will offer separate bedrooms for them. In America, for example, they train people to want to have their own rooms by giving them their own rooms when they are babies. This is very rare in the world. In many other countries, the baby sleeps in the same bed with his parents or in bed near them.

The space in the home also shows a lot about psychological space needs. Some families gather closer to each other and the size of their house has nothing to do with it. Others have separate little corners where family members go to bed alone.

Although it is true that psychological space needs are not decided by economic reasons, they sometimes have to be changed a little because of economic pressures. It is almost impossible, however,to completely change your psychological space needs.

1. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 means " ______ ". A. No two people need exactly the same amount of living space B. The requirements of living space are not always the same

C. The world requires the same amount of living space D. Nobody needs a required amount of living space

2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Americans are trained to live in large rooms at birth. B. Economic situation decides one's amount of space needs.

C. People in various countries demand different psychological space. D. Knowing your psychological space needs is important, as it affects your future.

( B )

3. A good title for this selection is ______ . A. People in Need of Help B. Safety and Protection C. The International Red Cross

D. Forming an Organization to Help the Soldiers 4. The underlined word "aided" in Paragraph 1 means " ______ ".

A. needed B. helped C. caught D. protected

Moderation

One should be moderate(適度) in all things. Moderation is always the safest way to do things and a virtue(品質)we should have. Let's take the student life for example. There are some students who study too hard and play too little, while there are others who play too much and study too little. On one hand, it is harmful to his health if he has too few exercises, and on the other hand, it is harmful to his mind if he plays too much.

In the matter of eating, one also should be moderate. Do not eat too much or too little. Too much eating will make you sick, while too little eating will make you weak.

The man of progress is he who neither has too high an opinion of himself nor thinks too poorly of himself. If a man thinks too highly of himself, he is sure to become very proud, but if he has too poor an opinion of himself, he will have no courage to make an advance. Both the conditions above will make you lose your advancing aim. A broadminded man is he who always moves within the orbit (軌道)of reasonableness. Whether in any activities in life, moderation is one of the best ways to enjoy real happiness.

1.―Someone is moderate‖ means ______ .

A.he walks neither too fast nor too slowly

B.he has good characters and good ways to do things

C.he is not only safe but also successful

D.he is either tall or short

2.The writer suggests that a student should ______ .

A.have much more time to study than to play

B.spend most of the time playing different games

C.only study hard without any time to play

D.correctly arrange (安排)his time for study and play

3. Moderate eating means ______ .

A.eating as much food as one can if the food is tasty B.eating food rich of fat

C.eating a proper amount of food D.eating either too much or too little

4.If one wants to be broad-minded, he must ______ .

A.believe in himself B.be full of courage

C.enjoy real happiness

D.do everything that is reasonable

It is often necessary to release a fish, that is , set it free after catching, because it is too small, or you just don’t want to take it home to eat. In some cases, releasing fish is a good measure that will help keep fish variety and build their population size. The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) encourages fishermen who practice catch-and-release fishing to use a few simple skills when doing so. The advice provided below will help make sure that the fish you release will survive (存活) to bite again another day.

—When catching a fish, play it quickly and keep the fish in the water as much as possible. Don’t use a net in landing the fish and release it quickly to prevent it from dying.

—Hold the fish gently. Do not put your fingers in its eyes. Don’t wipe the scales (魚鱗) off the fish because it might cause it to develop a disease and rece its chance of survival.

—Remove your hook (魚鉤) quickly. If the hook is too deep or hooked in the stomach, cut the line and leave the hook in. The hook left inside will cause no serious problem to the fish. —Take good care of the fish by moving it gently in water . Release the fish when it begins to struggle and is able to swim.

—Do not hold fish in a bucket or some other containers and later decide to release it. If you are going to release a fish, do so right away.

I believe that my country, Poland, is a perfect example for a place where food is particularly important. When we were little children, we began to understand how much a loaf of bread meant to our parents—to some it might sound silly but for me the custom of kissing bread before you started cutting it was simply amazing. It's not so common nowadays to treat food that way, since you hardly ever bake your own bread. Besides, everyone would call you crazy if you tried to kiss every bread roll before you ate them! But though we no longer make our food from scratch (起點), some customs have been kept--that's why I feel so sorry every time I have to throw any food away—even though I no longer live with my parents and nobody would blame me for this anymore!

Many people of our nation are still working as farmers, eating what they grow and harvest and therefore enjoying everything more. It's widely known that you value more anything that needs your effort in the first place. In most homes in Poland, especially those of farmers, the whole family would try and have their meals together--extremely difficult now, but so rewarding (值得) ! You can share other members' troubles and successes, give your children some attention, or just sit down for a moment instead of rushing through life aimlessly. Furthermore, your body, and stomach in particular will be very grateful (感激) for such a time!

In Poland, a wedding, Christmas or even a birthday is celebrated with a great meal. Women in the house get together and cook, sometimes for a few days before the event, and the extremely good or unusual food will be remembered and widely talked about.

You cannot over-value the importance of food in the country. What's more, almost everyone in Poland will be as interested in the topic as I am.

56. When the writer was a child, he / she ________.

A. found people were crazy about bread B. began to realize the importance of food

C. thought that cutting bread was amazing D. learned people hardly baked their own bread

57. The writer feels very sorry when he/she has to throw away any food because

A. he/she makes food from scratch B. his/her parents would blame him/her D. many people are still working hard C. some customs still have effect on him/her

as farmers

58. From the text, we can learn that, in Poland, ________.

A. most meals can be interesting topics for a long time

B. the whole family often have meals together nowadays

C. it's common for women to get together to cook for a few days

D. family members can know more. about each other by having meals together

For those who study the development of intelligence (智力) in the animal world,self-awareness is an important measurement. An animal that is aware (意識) of itself has a high level of intelligence.

Awareness can be tested by studying whether the animal recognizes itself in the mirror, that is, its own reflected image (反射出的影像). Many animals fail this exercise bitterly, paying very little attention to the reflected image. Only humans, and some intelligent animals like apes and dolphins, have been shown to recognize that the image in the mirror is of themselves.

Now another animal has joined the club. In the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers report that an Asian elephant has passed the mirror self-reflection test.

“We thought that elephants were the next important animal,”said Diana Reiss of the Wildlife Conservation Society, an author of the study with Joshua M. Plotnik and Fans B. M. de Waal of Emory University. With their large brains,Reiss said, elephants “seemed like cousins to apes and dolphins.”

The researchers tested Happy. Maxine and Patty, three elephants at the Bronx Zoo. They put an 8-foot-square mirror on a wall of the animals' play area (out of the sight of zoo visitors) and recorded what happened with cameras, including one built in the mirror.

The elephants used their long noses to find what was behind it,and to examine parts of their bodies.

Of the three, Happy then passed the test,in which a clear mark was painted on one side of her face. She could tell the mark was there by looking in the mirror, and she used the mirror to touch the mark with her long nose.

Diana Reiss said,“We knew elephants were intelligent, but now we can talk about their intelligence in a better way.”

文章通過實驗說明能意識到自身形象的動物具有高智商。

1. What can mirror tests tell us about animals?

A. Whether they have large brains.

C. Whether they enjoy outdoor exercises. B. Whether they have self-awareness. D. Whether they enjoy playing with mirrors. 答案:B。細節理解題。由文章第二段第一句話“Awareness can be tested by...”可知B項正確。

2. Why does the author mention apes and dolphins in the text?

A. They are most familiar to readers.

B. They are big favorites with zoo visitors.

C. They are included in the study by Reiss.

D. They are already known to be intelligent.

答案:D。推理判斷題。由第二段最後一句可知人們已經知道apes和dolphins是聰明的。

3. What made Happy different from Maxine and Patty?

A. She used her nose to search behind the mirror.

B. She recognized her own image in the mirror.

C. She painted a mark on her own face.

D. She found the hidden camera.

答案:B。推理判斷題。由倒數第二段可推出Happy能辨別出自己在鏡子中的形象。

A man went to see his doctor one day, because he was suffering from pains in his stomach. After the doctor had examined him carefully, he said to him, “Well, there‟s nothing really wrong with you, I‟m glad to say. Your only trouble is that you worry too much. Do you know, I had a man with the same trouble as you here a few weeks ago, and I gave him the same advice as I am going to give you. He was worried because he couldn‟t pay his tailor‟s bills. I told him not to worry about the bills any more. He took my advice and when he came to see me again two days ago, he told me that he now felt quite all right again. ” “Yes, I know all about that,” answered the patient sadly. “You see, I‟m that man‟s tailor!”

根據以上短文內容判斷正誤,正確的用“T”表示,錯誤的用“F”表示。

1. The tailor went to see his doctor because he has got a headache.

2. There is nothing serious with the tailor.

3. A man with the same trouble as the tailor a few days ago.

4. The doctor gave the man and the tailor the same advice.

5. The tailor was worried because a man couldn‟t pay his bills.

【答案及解析】

1. 選F。根據第1句A man went to see his doctor one day, because he was suffering from pains in his stomach可知本題是錯誤的。

2. 選T。根據…there is no thing really wrong with you (tailor)可知裁縫的身體並沒有什麼大礙,故可判斷此題與短文內容相符。

3. 選F。根據句子Do you know, I had a man with the same trouble as you here a few weeks ago可知本題所敘述的時間與短文內容不一致,因此可判斷此題是錯誤的。

4. 選T。根據…and I gave him the same advice as I am going to give you可知答案。

5. 選T。通讀全文我們可知:上一個病人是擔心他自己不能付錢給他的裁縫,而這個裁縫的病因卻是因為擔心那個人不能付錢給他的。

I‟ve loved my mother‟s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the more wonderful thing in the world.

Years later, ring her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she‟d said again, “it‟s for Elizabeth. ”

I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional(易動感情的)”. But she lived “on the surface(表面)”.

As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive(原諒) me.

I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.

My hope turned to disappointment(失望), then little interest and, finally, peace— it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn‟t be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

Now the present of her desk told, as she‟d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside —a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded(折疊) and refolded many times.

Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

3. The word “gulf” in the passage means ______.

A. deep understanding between the old and the young B. different ideas between the mother and the daughter

C. free talks between mother and daughter D. part of the sea going far in land

4. What did mother do with her daughter‟s letter asking forgiveness?

A. She had never received the letter. B. For years, she often talked about the letter.

C. She didn‟t forgive her daughter at all in all her life. D. She read the letter again and again till she died.

5. What‟s the best title of the passage?

A. My letter to Mother B. Mother and Children

C. My mother‟s Desk D. Talks between Mother and Me

【答案及解析】

1. 選C。根據I‟ve loved my mother‟s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. 可知作者當時還是個小孩子,故選C。

2. 選A。由But she lived “on the surface ”. 和全文內容可知,作者的母親表面上很冷漠,但心裡充滿了對作者的愛,正確答案是A。

3. 選B。從I was “too emotional”. But she lived “on the surface”. 可知此詞是指兩人之間不同的看法和觀點,應選B。

4. 選D。根據…a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times. 可知應選D。

5. 選C。文章的開頭I‟ve loved my mother‟s desk…以及後面的Now the present of her desk told, as she‟d never been able to…可知作者是托物思人,以表達自己對母親的懷念之情,所以最佳標題應是C。

I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal butseemed disturbed. 便捷電腦

Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees—anywhere at all!

Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher ecation, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-ecation officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.

At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “ Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

1. The main purpose of the laptop program is to give each student a laptop to _______.

A. use for their schoolwork B. access the Internet

C. work at home D. connect them to libraries

2. Why is the word “speak” in the second paragraph in quotation marks(引號)?

A. They don’t really talk. B. They use the computer language.

C. Laptops have speakers. D. None of the above reasons is correct.

3. Which of the following is true about Westlake College?

A. All teachers use computers. B. 1500 students have laptops.

C. It is an old college in America. D. Students there can do everything.

4. A window on the world in the last paragraph means that students can _______.

A. attend lectures on information technology

B. travel around the world

C. get information from around the world

D. have free laptops

5. What can we infer from the passage?

Today just as technology changed the face of instry, farms have undergone an “agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power.

One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock to buy, when to sell their procts, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for hog procers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.

Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make startling changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete mobilization of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.
