Bright Star
——John Keats
Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art—
Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night
And watching, with eternal lids apart,
Like nature』s patient, sleepless Eremite,
The moving waters at their priestlike task
Of pure ablution round earth』s human shores,
Or gazing on the new soft-fallen mask
Of snow upon the mountains and the moors—
No–yet still stedfast, still unchangeable,
Pillow』d upon my fair love』s ripening breast,
To feel for ever its soft fall and swell,
Awake for ever in a sweet unrest,
Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath,
And so live ever–or else swoon to death.
O! how much more doth beauty beauteous seem
By that sweet ornament which truth doth give.
The rose looks fair, but fairer we it deem
For that sweet odour, which doth in it live.
The canker blooms have full as deep a dye
As the perfumed tincture of the roses,
Hang on such thorns, and play as wantonly
When summer's breath their masked buds discloses:
But, for their virtue only is their show,
They live unwoo'd, and unrespected fade;
Die to themselves. Sweet roses do not so;
Of their sweet deaths are sweetest odours made:
And so of you, beauteous and lovely youth,
When that shall vade, my verse distills your truth.
With How Sad Steps, O Moon
Philip Sidney
With how sad steps, O moon, thou climb』st the skies!
How silently, and with how wan a face!
What! may it be that even in heavenly place
That busy archer his sharp arrows tries?
Sure, if that long-with-love-acquainted eyes
Can judge of love, thou feel』st a lover』s case:
I read it in thy looks, ---thy languished grace
To me, that feel the like, thy state descries.
Then, even of fellowship, O moon, tell me,
Is constant love deemed there but want of wit?
Are beauties there as proud as here they be?
Do they above love to be loved, and yet
Those lovers scorn whom that love doth possess?
Do they call virtue there ungratefulness?

I NEVER hear the word "escape"
Without a quicker blood,
A sudden expectation,
A flying attitude.
I never hear of prisons broad
by soldiers battered1 down,
But I tug2 childish at my bars--
Only to fail again!
The Ten mandments
But I could be covetous1. I could be a thief.
Could want and work for. Could wire and
Deceive. I thought to fool the moon into
A doubt. I did some doubting. Lord,
Forgive me. In New Orleans that winter,
I waited for a woman to find me shirtless
On her back porch. Why? She meant it
Rhetorically and hit me with open hands.
How many times can a woman say why
With her hands in the moonlight? I counted
Ten like light breaking hard on my head,
Ten rhetorical whys and half a moon. Half-
Nude, I let her light into me. I could be last
On a list of lovers Joe Adams would see,
And first to find his wife slapping the spit
Out of me. I could be sick and sullen2. I could
Sulk and sigh. I could be a novel character
By E. Lynn Harris, but even he'd allow me
Some dignity. He loved black people too
Much to write about a wife whipping her rival
On a night people in Louisiana call cold.
He'd have Joe Adams run out back and pull
Her off of me. He wouldn't think I deserved it.
Dream heart
They took the old heart out of your chest
all blue and spoiled like a sick grapefruit
the way you removed your first wife from your life,
and put a strong young blonde one in her place.
What happened to the old heart is unrecorded
but the wife es back sometimes in your dreams,
vengeful and berating1, with a hairdo orange as flame,
like a mother who has forgotten that she loved you
more than anything. How impossible it is to tell
bravery from selfishness down here,
a leap of faith from a doomed2 attempt at flight.
What happened to the old heart is the scary part:
thrown into the trash, and never seen again,
but it persists3. Now it's like a ghost,
with its bloated purple face,
moving through a world of ghosts,
that's all of us;
dreaming we're alive, that we're in love.
Recalibration
The repairman arrives at night to fix
the telephone wires fried by lightning.
He unscrews a metal box encasing a joint1,
and a tangle2 of colored cords spills out
like a half-remembered dream. It works,
he says. But it will never be the same.
I stand in the road and watch him
drive into the gray dawn, his palm
held open out the window.
Is Heaven a Physician?
Is Heaven a Physician?
They say that He can heal -
But Medicine Posthumous
Is unavailable -
Is Heaven an Exchequer1?
They speak of what we owe -
But that negotiation
I』m not a Party to -
他們說他能治病;
他們談及我們欠的債;

Rain 雨
Rain is falling all around,
It falls on field and tree,
It rains on the umbrella here, 它落在這邊的雨傘上,
And on the ships at sea.
by R. L. Stevenson, 1850-1894
THE WIND 風
(Part I)
Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you; 誰也沒見過,不論你或我;
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.
(Part II)
Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I; 誰也沒見過,不論你或我;
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.
~by C. G. Rossetti
he Star 星星
(1)
Twinkle, twinkle, little star!
How I wonder what you are, 我想知道你身形,
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.
(2)
When the blazing sun is gone,
When he nothing shines upon,
Then you show your little light,
Twinkle, twinkle all the night.
(3)

(4)
'Tis your bright and tiny spark
Lights the traveler in the dark;

by Jane Taylor, 1783-1824
The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe
There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.
With so many children, the place was a zoo.
The windows were broken, the roof was a leaker.
But that's what you get when you live in a sneaker.
I'm a Wizard, I'm a Warlock
I'm a wizard, I'm a warlock,
I'm a wonder of the age.
I'm a sorcerer, magician,
prestidigitator, mage.
I can change into a chicken,
or perhaps a purple pig.
I can wave my wand and, presto,
I'm a waffle with a wig.
With the power in my pinky
I can burst like a balloon
or transform into a tiger
with the head of a baboon.
If I wiggle on my earlobe
or I knock upon my knee
I bee a dancing doughnut
or a turtle in a tree.
Just a simple incantation
and I deftly disappear,
which I never should have done
because I've been this way all year.
And despite my mighty magic
I'm impossible to see,
for I never learned the spells I need
to turn back into me.
Can't Sleep
I'm battling insomnia.
I cannot get to sleep
despite a rather valiant
attempt at counting sheep.
I counted to a hundred.
Then I had a glass of milk.
I fluffed my little pillow
in its pillowcase of silk.
I made a pot of herbal tea
and drank at least a cup.
I sang myself a lullaby
and pulled my blankie up.
I plugged my ears with cotton balls.
I covered up my eyes.
I took relaxing breaths
and did a stretching exercise.
I've tried and tried to get to sleep
but just can't find a way.
It's looking like I'll have to
stay awake in class today.
I'm Practicing Telepathy
I'm practicing telepathy.
I'm learning ESP.
I'm getting mental images
like pictures on TV.
I thought I'd pick your brain a bit.
I thought I'd read your mind,
to get the answers to this test,
but now I'm in a bind.
I probed your thoughts and consciousness,
and now I guarantee,
we both are gonna flunk
because you're ing from me.
