People used to say, “The hand that rocks (搖) the cradle (搖籃) rules the world.” and “Behind every successful man there is a woman.”

Both these sayings mean the same thing. Men rule the world, but their mothers and wives rule them..

Most American women wish to make their husbands and sons successful, but some of them want more for themselves. They want good jobs. When they work they want to be better paid. They want to be as successful as men.

The American women’s liberation movement was started by women who didn’t want to stand behind successful men. They wanted to stand beside men, with the same chance for success. They refused to work side by side with men who do the same work for a higher pay.

A liberated woman must be proud of being a woman and have confidence (自信) in herself. If somebody says to her, “You have come a long way, baby.” she will smile and answer, “Not nearly as far as I’m going to go, baby!”

This movement is quite new, and many American women don’t agree yet. But it has already made some important changes in women’s lives--- in men’s lives, too.

According to the dictionary definition of 「create」, ordinary people are creative every day. To create means 「to bring into being, to cause to exist」—something each of us does daily.

We are creative whenever we look at or think about something in a new way. First this involves an awareness of our surroundings. It means using all of our sese to bee aware of our world. This may be as simple as being aware of color and texture, as well as taste, when we plan a meal. Above all, it is the ability to notice things that others might miss.

A second part of creativity is an ability to see relationships among things. I f we believe the expression, 「There is nothing new under the sun,」 the creativ ity is remaking or rebining the old in new ways. For example, we might do this by finding a more effective way to study or a better way to arrange our furniture, or we might make a new bination of camera lenses and filters to cr eate an unusual photograph.

A third part of creativity is the courage and drive to make use of our new ide as, to apply them to achieve some new results. To think up a new concept is one thing; to put the idea to work is another.

These three parts of creativity are involved in all the great works of genius, but they are also involved in many of our day to day activities.

26.Which of the following activities is NOT a creative one according to t he passage?

A.To prepare a meal.

A.we can seldom create new things B.a new thing is only a tale

C.a new thing can only be created at the basis of original things D.we can scarcely see really new things in the world

29.What does the author think about the relationship between a new though t and its being put into practice?

A.It』s more difficult to create a new thought than to apply it in practice.

B.To find a new thought will definitely lead to the proction of a new thing.

C.One may e up with a new thought, but can not put it into practice.

D.A man with an excellent ability of practice can easily bee an inventor.

A.How to Cultivate One』s Creativity B.What is Creativity

C.The Importance of Creativity D.Creativity—a Not Farway Thing

When I was studying at Yale, some phenomena puzzled me greatly. I found that Chinese students or Asian students were very polite in class while American students often interrupted the professor, asking questions and dominating the discussion. The Chinese students were not as aggressive as American students.

I was impressed by the role of the professor in the seminar***討論會***. The professor didn』t act as an authority, giving final conclusions, but as a reseac her looking for answers to questions together with the students. One lingui stic***語言的*** feature of his interacting with his students was that he used many modal***情態的*** verbs—far more than I did in Beiwai. When answering questions, he usually said, 「This is my personal opinion and it could be wrong.」 or 「You could be right, but you might find this point of view also interesting.」

In China, authorities are always supposed to give wise decisions and correct di rections. Therefore, students always expect the professor to give an answer to th e question. I still remember how frustrated they were when foreign teachers did not provide such an answer. Their expectations from authorities are much higher than that of American students. Once the Chinese students got the answer, they w ere sure about it.

Ecation in China is valued for united thinking. I remember American teachers who taught in our university plaining about the fact that Chinese students u niformly expressed the same idea in their English position. The examinations in America usually do not test a student』s ability to memorize the material but his ability to *** yze and solve problems. Ecation in America is valued not on ly as a means to obtain employment but as a process of enhancing critical thinking.

31.In the USA, when the students are in class, ____.

A.a Chinese student tends to be very active B.an American student likes to make trouble

C.a Chinese student likes to puzzle the teacher D.an American student tends to be vigorous

32.A teacher in the USA prefers to ____ when he answers questions.

A.be very sincere B.be very direct

C.be very self confident D.be very indifferent

33.What is the opinion of the author concerning the difference of teachin g methods between China and the USA?

A.He thinks that Chinese teaching metods can make students learn more.

B.He holds that the major purpose of Chinese teaching methods is to impro ve students』 remembrance.

C.He thinks that American teaching is ability oriented.

D.He holds that American teachers hate to give a test.

34.The author thinks that the relationship between the student and the te acher is ____.

A.more intimate in China B.closer in China C.looser in USA D.more harmonious in USA

35.The ecation in USA may proce some ____ graates.

A.talkative B.conventional C.creative D.imaginative

32.答案A。

It is not often realized that women held a high place in southern European societies in the 10th and 11th centuries. As a wife, the woman was protected by the setting up of a dowry (彩禮). Admittedly, the purposeof this was to protect her against the risk of desertion, but in reality its function in the social and family life of the time was much more important. The dowry was the wife』s right to receive a tenth of all her husband』擾卜s property. The wife had the right to with hold consent, in all transactions the husband wouldmake, and more than just a right; the documents show that she enjoyed a real power of decision, equal to that of her husband. In no case do the documents indicate any degree of difference in the legal status of husband and wife.

The wife shared in the management of her husband』s personal property, but the opposite was not always true. Women seemed perfectly prepared to defend their own inheritance against husbands who tried to exceed their rights, and on occasion they showed a fine fighting spirit. A case in point is that of Maria Vivas. Having agreed with her husband Miro to sell a field she had inherited, for the needs of the household, she insisted on compensation. None being offered, she succeeded in dragging her husband to the scribe(法學家) to have a contract ly drawn up assigning her a piece of land from Miro』s personal inheritance. The unfortunate husband was obliged to agree, as the contract says, 「for the sake of peace.」 Either through the dowry or through being hot-tempered, the wife knew how to win herself, with the context of the family, a powerful economic position.ric illnesses including depression often do not manifest themselves until the late teens or early 20s.

Having agreed with her husband可推斷售賣妻子繼承的財產必須先徵得妻子的同意,因此選項A正確。

There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling .No school I have taught in has ever _____ spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however , vastly different ideas about how to teach it , or how much _____ it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is , how to encourage a child to express himself freely and _____ in writing with out holding him back with the complexities of spelling? If spelling become the only focal point of his teacher』s interest, clearly a __4__ child will be likely to 「play safe」. He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid __5__ language. That』s why teachers often __6__ the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability. I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience :「 This work is __7__ !There are far too many spelling errors and your writing is illegible( 難以辨認的 ).」 It may have been a sharp __8__ of the pupil』s technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which __9__ some beautiful expressions of the child』s deep feelings.

The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities had centred on the child』s ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more __10__ to seek improvement.

A)priority B)criticism C)contained D)clearly

E)adventurous F ) discourage G)motivation H)terrible

I)ignored J)difficult K)encourage L)expressed

M)confidently N)bright O)motive L)expressed

由後半句中 a sad reflection on the teacher 可知,前半句是在指責學生,故選項中只有criticism符合題意。

Many of us mistakenly believe that it's wrong to think we have any good qualities. We may spend a lot of time blaming ourselves for our negative qualities, thinking that self criticism is the key to improving our performance. However, a constant focus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to make friends with other people. How can we believe that others could like us if we believe our inner being is flawed(有缺陷)?

If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might have little or nothing to do with you. The person who doesn't like you might be fearful, or shallow, or busy or shy. Perhaps you and that person are simply a mismatch for each other at this particular time.

Don't take yourself out of the game by deciding that your flaws are bigger than your good qualities. In fact, some o f the very qualities you consider to be flaws may be irresistible to someone else. For all the factors that might cause one person to reject you, there are at least as many factors that will work in your favor with someone else.

You might be thirty pounds over your ideal weight, but you may have a wonderful laugh and a real enthusiasm for life. There are many people who don’t mind your extra pounds. You may drive a shabby car, but you might be a great dancer and a loyal friend. There are people out there looking for loyalty, or fun, or sweetness, or wisdom, and the package it comes in is not important. If you are worried that you are not beautiful enough to attract friends, keep in mind that not everyone is looking for physical beauty in their friends. You can decide to feel inferior(自卑) because you don't have much money and you don't drive a nice car. You can believe that this is the reason that you don't have many friends in your life. On the other hand, if you are very wealthy you may be suspicious that everyone is after your money and that nobody really likes yo u as a person.

The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it's the reason you do not have friends and cannot make any.

Sunny countries are often poor. A shame, then, that solar power is still quite expensive. Eight19, a British company by Cambridge University, has, however, invented a novel way to get round this. In return for a deposit of around $10 it is supplying poor Kenyan families with a solar cell able to generate 2.5 watts of electricity, a battery that can deliver a three amp(安培) current to store this electricity, and a lamp whose bulb is a light-emitting diode(二極體). The firm thinks that this system, once the battery is fully charged, is enough to light two small rooms and to power a mobile-phone charger for seven hours. Then, next day, it can be put outside and charged back up again.

The trick is that, to be able to use the electricity, the system's keeper must buy a scratch card—for as little as a dollar—on which is printed a reference number. The keeper sends this reference, plus the serial number of the household solar unit, by SMS to Eight19. The company's server will respond automatically with an access code to the unit.

Users may consider that they are paying an hourly rate for their electricity. In fact, they are paying off the cost of the unit. After buying around $80 worth of scratch cards—which Eight19 expects would take the average family around 18 m onths—the user will own it. He will then have the option of continuing to use it for nothing, or of trading it in for a bigger one, perhaps driven by a 10-watt solar cell.

In that case, he would go then through the same process again, paying off the additional cost of the upgraded kit at a slightly higher rate. Users would therefore increase their electricity supply steadily and affordably.

According to Eight19's figures, this looks like a good deal for customers. The firm believes the average energy-starved Kenyan spends around $10 a month on oil—enough to fuel a couple of smoky lamps—plus $2 on charging his mobile phone in the market-place. Regular users of one of Eight19's basic solar units will spend around half tha t, before owning it completely. Meanwhile, as the cost of solar tech nology falls, it should get even cheaper.

41. The underlined word “get round” in the first paragraph can be replaced by _______ .

A. make use of B. come up with C. look into D. deal with

make use of利用; come up with想出; look into調查; deal with處理。根據solar power is still quite expensive及Eight19, a British company by Cambridge University, has, however, invented a novel way to因為太陽能仍然很貴,所以Eight19發明了一個新的 方法 來解決這個問題,故選D。

42. What should the user do when the electricity in the battery is used up?

A. Buy a scratch card.

B. Recharge it outside.

C. Buy another solar cell.

D. Return it to the company.

Then, next day, it can be put outside and charged back up again.

43. How much would users pay for the cell and scratch cards before they own a 2.5-watt solar cell?

A. Around $10. B. Around $80. C. Around $90. D. Around $180.

While Andrew was getting ready for work one Friday morning, he announced to his wife that he had finally decided to ask his boss for a salary raise. All day Andrew felt nervous and anxious as he thought about the upcoming showdown. What if Mr Larchmont refused to grant his request? Andrew had worked so hard in the last 18 months and landed some great accounts for Braer and Hopkins Advertising Agency. Of course, he deserved a wage increase.

The thought of walking into Larchmont’s office left Andrew weak in the knees. Late in the afternoon he was finally courageous enough to approach his superior. To his delight and surprise, the ever-frugal(一向節儉的)Harvey Larchmont agreed to give Andrew a raise!

Andrew arrived home that evening—despite breaking all city and state speed limits—to a beautiful table set with their best china, and candles lit. His wife, Tina, had prepared a delicate meal including his favorite dishes. Immediately he figured someone from the office had tipped her off!

Next to his plate Andrew found a beautiful lettered note. It was from his wife. It read: “Congratulations, my love! I knew you’d get the raise! I prepared this dinner to show just how much I love you. I am so proud of your accomplishments!” He read it and stopped to reflect on how sensitive and caring Tina was.

After dinner, Andrew was on his way to the kitchen to get dessert when he observed that a second card had slipped out of Tina’s pocket onto the floor. He bent forward to pick it up. It read: “Don’t worry about not getting the raise! You do deserve one! You are a wonderful provider and I prepared this dinner to show you just how much I love you even though you did not get the increase.”

Suddenly tears swelled in Andrew’s eyes. Total acceptance! Tina’s support for him was not conditional upon his success at work.

You must have been troubled by when to say "I love you" because it is one of the greatest puzzles in our life.

What if you say it first and your partner doesn’ t love you back? or if they do say. it but you don’t feel they mean it? Being the first to declare your love can be nerver racking(緊張)and risky and can leave you feeling as vulnerable as a turtle with no shell. But is the person who says it first really in a position of weakness? Doesn’ t it pay to hold back, play it cool and wait until the other half has shown their hand fast?

A really good relationship should be about being fair and being equal," says psychologist Sidney Crown. "But love is seldom equal. " All. relationships go through power struggles but, he says, if a love imbalance continues for years, the rot will set in. "That feeling of ’ I’ ve always loved you more’ may be subverted(顛覆,破壞) for a time, but it never goes away completely and it often emerges in squabbling(大聲爭吵). " In love, at least, the silent, withholding type is not always the most powerful. "The strongest one in a relationship is often the person who feels confident enough to talk about their feelings," says ecational psychologist Ingrid Collins. Psychosexual therapist Paula Hall agrees. "The one with the upper hand is often the person who takes the initiative. In fact, the person who says ’ I love you’ first may also be the one who says ’ I’ m bored with you’ first. " Hall believes that much depends on how "I love you" is said and the motivation of the person saying it. "Is it said when they’ re drunk? Is it said. before their partner files off on holiday, and what it really means is ’ Please don’ t be unfaithful to me’ ? By saying ’ I love you’, they really saying’ Do you love me?’ If so, wouldn’t it just be more honest to say mat.Collins agrees that intention is everything. "It’s not what is said, but how it’ s said. What it comes down to is the sincerity of the speaker.”

52.D【解析】“You must have been troubled by when to say ‘I love you’ because it is one of the greatest puzzles in our life.”

53.A【解析】見第三段的“A really good relationship should be about being fair and being equal”。
