"They bought the seedlings and closed them down,"complained  Paul Amold a partner at San Francisco-based Switch Ventures, putting an end to businesses that might one day tum into competitors. Microsoft declined to comment.

Although only are search project at this stage, the request has raised the prospect of regulators wading into early-stage tech markets that until now have been beyond their reach.

Given their combined market value of more than $5.5trillion, rifling through such small deals-many of them much less prominent than Wunderlist and Sunrise-might seem beside the point.

❤Between them, the five biggest tech companies have spent an average of only S 3.4 billion a year on sub-SI billion acquisitions over the past five years— a drop in the ocean compared with their massive financial reserves, and the more than S 130 billion of venture capital that was invested in the US last year.

1、"Reskilling" is something 【 that sounds like a buzzword】   but is actually a requirement   {   if we plan to have a future   【 in which a lot of would-be workers do not get left behind】}   。

2、 We know(that) {【we are moving into a period 】(where the jobs in demand will change rapidly), as will the requirements of the jobs 【that remain】.}我們知道人們正在進入一個工作需求將發生迅速變化的時期,剩餘崗位的需求也會很快改變。

正常語序是the requirements of the jobs that remain  will (change rapidly)

3、 ⭐ Research by the World Economic Forum finds that on average 42 per cent of the"core skills" within job roles will change by 2022.   That is a very short timeline.

1、The question of who should pay for reskilling is a thorny one.

2、 ⭐ For indivial companies, the temptation is always to let go of workers 【whose skills are no longer in demand 】and replace them with those 【whose skills are.(省略 in demand) 】

3、(轉折句)That does not always happen.

4、 ⭐ AT&T is often given as the gold standard of a company 【 that decided to do a massive reskilling program rather than go with a fire-and-hire strategy. 】

5、Other companies had also pledged to create their own plans.

6、When the skills mismatch is in the broader economy, though(轉折) ,the focus usually turns to government to handle.

7、 ⭐ Efforts in Canada and elsewhere have been arguably languid at best, and have given us a situation 【where we frequently hear of employers (begging for workers)】,even at times and in regions【 where unemployment is high】.

and have givenus asituation,and

1、With the pandemic, unemployment is very high indeed.

2、In February,at 3.5 percent and 5.5 percent respectively, unemployment rates in Canada and United States were at generational lows and worker shortages were everywhere.

3、As of May, those rates had spiked up to 13.3 per cent and 13.7 per cent, and although many worker shortages had disappeared, not all had done so.

4、 ⭐ In the medical field, to take an obvious example, the pandemic meant that there were still clear shortages of doctors, nurses and other medical personnel.

1、Of course,it is not like you can take and unemployed waiter and train him to be a doctor in a few weeks.

2、But even if you cannot close that gap,may be you can close others, and doing so would be to the benefit of all concerned.

3、 ⭐ That seems to be the case in Sweden: 【When forced to furlough 90 per cent of their cabin staff】 , Scandinavian Airlines decided to start up a short retraining program 【 that reskilled the laid-off workers to support hospital staff.】

4、The effort was a collective one and involved other companies as well as a Swedish university.

21.Research by the World Economic Forum Suggests _____.

[A] an urgent demand for new job skills (「

[B] an increase in full-time employment

[C] a steady growth of job opportunities

[D]a controversy about the"core skills"    原文是 will change,並沒有說「爭議」

Passage One

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

When Rowland Hill, little more than a hundred years ago, first advocated the introction of cheap postage in England, he had to face many opponents of the scheme; some said that it would not pay, others that it was unworkable. But Hill, supported by general public opinion, eventually overcame opposition, and late in 1839 the Penny Post was established. From then until the first world war the cost of sending a letter any distance within the United Kingdom remained at one penny. The gloomy prophecies (預言) of the critics were not fulfilled: the profits of the Post Office were maintained and improvements in transport and administration made it possible not only to handle the increased volume of correspondence but also to extend postal facilities.

Before this great change took place, the charge for sending a letter varied according to the distance the letter was carried and had to be paid for on delivery by the person to whom it was addressed. The lowest charge was four pence and for long distances as much as eighteen pence. Such high rates, when wages were low, could rarely be afforded by poor people, who were often compelled to refuse letters from their dear ones because they were unable to pay. Under the new scheme, a letter was paid for by the sender, who affixed(貼上) to it an adhesive(粘的) postage stamp, the cost of which was within reach of all. Thus the poor were enabled to exchange news with their relations and friends at a time when many of them had left their homes to seek work elsewhere.

Businessmen also found cheap postage a boom and, since it soon turned out to be a great financial success, the new scheme was, before long, adopted by every civilized country in the world——a final tribute(明證) to the wisdom and vision of its promoter.

21. 「Some said that it (i.e. Rowland Hill\'s scheme) would not pay」 means ________.

A. some said that people would refuse to pay for the scheme

B. some said that the scheme would not be profitable

C. some said that the scheme was not economical

D. some said that they did not have enough money to pay for the scheme

22. Rowland Hill\'s system is known as the 『Penny post』 ________.

A. because it undertook the delivery of all inland letters for the charge of one penny

B. since it was established late in 1839

C. because many people who used its facilities were poor

D. as a result of the gloomy prophecies of those who had said scheme would not pay

23. Postal facilities were extended after the introction of the Penny Post ________.

A. because the volume of correspondence increased

B. as a result of improvements in transport and administration

C. until the first world war

D. provided that the cost of sending a letter remained at one penny

24. Under the old system the poor had frequently been compelled to refuse letters ________.

A. because they could not afford to pay the high postage rates which had to be paid on receipt of a letter

B. unless the charge on them was less than four pence

C. although rates varied according to the distance letters were carried

D. because many of them had left their homes to seek work elsewhere

25. The new postal scheme was adopted by every civilized country in the world ________.

A. because it enabled the poor, as well as the rich, to exchange news

B. as a tribute to the wisdom and vision of its promoter

C. since the scheme, in addition to its convenience, had proved financially successful

D. a hundred years after its adoption by the English

Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. 「Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?」 「When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?」「And Paul-why didn\'t I pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car?」 When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it\'s too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends——or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don\'t really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, 「You\'re a lucky dog.」 Is he really on your side? If he said, 「You\'re a lucky guy」 or 「You\'re a lucky gal,」 that\'s being friendly. But 「lucky dog」? There\'s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn\'t see it himself. But bringing in the 「dog」 bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn\'t think you deserve your luck.

「Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for」 is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn\'t important. It\'s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven\'t got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone\'s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says quare with(符合) the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.

26. In the first paragraph, the writer recalls some things that happened between him and his friends. He ________.

A. feels happy, thinking of how nice his friends were to him

B. feels he may not have 「read」 his friends\' true feeling correctly

C. is sorry that his friends let him down

D. thinks it was a mistake to have broken up with his girl friends, Helen

27. In the second paragraph, the writer talks about someone saying, 「You\'re a lucky dog.」 He is saying that ________.

A. the speaker of this sentence is just being friendly

B. this saying means the same as 「You\'re a lucky guy」 or 「You\'re a lucky gal.」

C. the word 「dog」 shouldn\'t be used to apply to people

D. sometimes the words give a clue(線索) to the feeling behind the words

28. This passage tries to tell you how to ________.

A. avoid mistakes about money and friends

B. 「size up」 people

C. avoid mistakes in understanding what people tell you

D. keep people friendly without trusting them

29. In listening to a person the important thing is ________.

A. to notice his tone, his posture, and the look in his eye

B. to listen to how he pronounces his words

C. to check his words against his manner, his tone of voice, and his posture

D. not to believe what he says

30. The phrase 『puts you down』 (Para 2, Line 7) can be replaced by another phrase 「________」.

A. makes you humble B. reces you to silence

C. press you down D. makes you sad Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

It is not often realized that women held a high place in southern European societies in the 10th and 11th centuries. As a wife, the woman was protected by the setting up of a dowry or decimum. Admittedly, the purpose of this was to protect her against the risk of desertion(拋棄), but in reality its function in the social and family life of the time was much more important. The decimum was the wife\'s right to receive a tenth of all her husband\'s property. The wife had the right to withhold consent(不同意), in all transactions(交易) the husband would make. And more than just a right: the documents show that she enjoyed a real power of decision, equal to that of her husband. In no case do the documents indicate any degree of difference in the legal status of husband and wife.

The wife shared in the management of her husband\'s personal property, but the opposite was not always true. Women seemed perfectly prepared to defend their own inheritance against husbands who tried to exceed their rights, and on occasion they showed a fine fighting spirit. A case in point is that of Maria Vivas, a Catalan woman of Barcelona(巴塞羅那). Having agreed with her husband Miro to sell a field she had inherited, for the needs of the household, she insisted on co mpensation(補償). None being offered, she succeeded in dragging her husband to the scribe(法律學家) to have a contract ly drawn up assigning her a piece of land from Miro\'s personal inheritance. The unfortunate husband was obliged to agree, as the contract says, 「for the sake of peace.」 Either through the dowry or through being hottempered, the Catalan wife knew how to win herself, within the context of the family, a powerful economic position.

31. A decimum was ________.

A. the wife\'s inheritance from her father

B. a gift of money to the new husband

C. a written contract

D. the wife\'s right to receive onetenth of her husband\'s property

32. In the society described in the passage, the legal standing(地位) of the wife in marriage was ________.

A. higher than that of her husband

B. lower than that of her husband

C. the same as that of her husband

D. higher than that of a single woman

33. What compensation did Maria Vivas get for the field?

A. Some of the land Miro had inherited

B. A tenth of Miro\'s land

C. Money for household expenses

D. Money from Miro\'s inheritance

34. Could a husband sell his wife\'s inheritance?

A. No, under no circumstances.

B. Yes, whenever he wished to.

C. Yes, if she agreed.

D. Yes, if his father in law agreed.

35. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an effect of the dowry system?

A. The husband had to share the power of decision in marriage.

B. The wife was protected from desertion.

C. The wife gained a powerful economic position.

D. The husband was given control over his wife\'s property. PART TWO

Check yourself on these points and be sure you are doing the right things. You should always move your eyes from left to right across the page. Always keep moving forward. Do not let your eyes go back over words you have already read. Do not read words separately. Learn to see groups of words. Do not sound out(發響) the words as you read them. And remember that you do not have to read every word. Look for the main nouns and the main verbs.

Section II Reading Comprehension

Part A

Text 1

[A] offered greater relaxation than the workplace

[C ] childless husbands

文章第二段第三句和第四句提到「It is men not women, who report being happier at home than at work…, but more so for nonparents.」

[D] they are both bread winners and housewives

文章第三段中提到「For many men, the end of the workday is …, with the blurring of role……」.

[C] earnings

[A] division of labor at home is seldom clear-cut

最後一段第一句指出「然而,人們對於大後方(家庭)就沒有那麼清楚了」,接下來的一句進一步指出「Rare is the household in which the division of labor is so clinically…」(家務活的分工很少清清楚楚),A項中的「seldom」同意置換原文中的「Rare」, 「clear-cut」同意置換原文的「clinically」,故A項正確。

Text 2

[D] missed its original purpose

【解析】根據題干關鍵詞recruiting more first-generation students迴文定位到第一段的第四句,然後一一比對選項,「rather than close an achievement gap based on social class」排除選項B,選項A和C是無關選項,由第四句話中This has created 「a paradox」 in that recruiting first-generation students…

[C] the problem is solvable

【解析】根據題干信息「research article are optimistic because… 可以迴文定位到文章第二段第一句「But the article is actually quite optimistic, as it outlines a potential solution to this problem」。As引導的原因狀語從句是題干答案,跟C選「the problem is solvable」重合,因此選C。

[C] are in need of financial support

定位第三段最後一句中,「most of first-generation students were recipients of Pell Grants(佩爾獎學金),a federal grant for undergraates with financial need",可知答案為C,其中in need of和with...need對應,financial support 和financial相對應。

[D] are inexperienced in handling their issues at college

【解析】根據題干關鍵詞the author of the paper迴文定位到文章第四段第一句「their thesis ...that face most college students」。這句話中明確說到第一代學生缺乏處理一些問題的實際經驗,與選項D語義相符,其中are inexperienced與原文的lacking in practical knowledge對應,handling their issues與how to deal with the issues對應,at college與that face most college students對應。

[B] colleges are partly responsible for the problem in question

Text 3

[A]more emotional

題干中的office language對應文章中的lingua franca of corporate(公司通用語),題干中的has become對應文章中的has gotten,所以答案對應文章中的more emotional and much more right-brained。所以答案A more emotional。

[C] sports culture

[D] strengthen employee loyalty

本句中出現are intended to表示目的,對應題干中的aims to,句子出現了increase allegiance to the firm,對應D strengthen employee loyalty,表示「加強員工的忠誠度」。

[A] voices for working women

[D] regular people mock it but accept it

Companies find it to fundamental,屬於推理過度,文章說的是depend on,依靠並不說明fundamental根本的。

Text 4

[B] the increase of part-time jobs

第二句具體指出被忽略的部分是「there was a big jump in the number of people who report voluntarily working part-time.」,即有大量的人自願從事兼職工作。 其中increase是原文jump的同義替換,voluntary part-time jobs是voluntarily working part-time的同義轉述。

[C] cannot get their hands on full-time jobs

【解析】根據題干中的關鍵詞「many people work part-time」可以定位到第二段第五句話「many people who work part-time jobs actually want full-time jobs」。 接著第六句明確指出他們從事兼職工作的原因:they take part-time because this is all they can get。

[B] shows a general tendency of decline

[B] employment is no longer a precondition to get insurance

[A] employment in the US

Part B

[D] Most of your fears are unreal

【解析】本段中出現了多次詞義復現,如Fear is not real以及fears are just the proct of our luxuriant imagination(恐懼只是豐富想像的產物)。

[E] Think about the present moment

[G] There are many things to be grateful for

[A] You are not alone

[C] Pave your own unique path

【解析】該段落主題句為「When you…you should believe in yourself and be sure that your decision is the best.」 下文進一步闡釋,其中own thoughts, own values 以及own choices構成了標題中的own unique path。

21、[B]remodel the way of thinking
It』s not as hard for them to transform their thought processes as it is for older students. [B]remodel the way of thinking是對原文「transform their thought」的同義改寫。
22、[D] interest
根據題干「in delivering lessons for high-schoolers」、「Flatiron 」,定位到第四段。 The high-schoolers get the same curriculum, but 「we try to gear lessons toward things they』re interested in」(高中生們上同樣的課程,但是「我們力圖以他們的興趣來調整課程」),說明該校開設課程是主要考慮到「學生的興趣」,故選[B] interest。
23、[A] help students learn other computer languages
But the skills they learn —..... — apply to any coding language,。
24、[C] become better prepared for the digitalized world
A. compete with a future army of programmers和B. stay longer in the information technology instry(都在談IT行業)第三句進一步指出這些學生將會一生「被電腦包圍」(對應the digitalized world),第四句繼續表明態度,越早學習電腦思維方式越好(且又一次進行比較the earlier the better),[C] become better prepared for the digitalized world是對上述內容的概況總結。
25、[B] persuade
