As we all know, different countries have different table manners. Today, I』d like to introce something about Chinese table manners. It』s very necessary to learn table manners in China. In China, table manners are too much. For instance, you are not supposed to eat with knives and forks. Chinese usually use chopsticks instead. But we are not supposed to stick our chopsticks into our food. But we are supposed to pick up our bowl to eat. And we are supposed to let the old start eating first. And we are allowed to talk at the table. However, you can』t talk too loud and laugh too crazily. In fact, in China, table manners are not so serious . so , you don』t need to worry about them so much.

Of course, chopsticks instead the main difference on the Chinese dinner table isof knife and fork, but that's only superficial. Besides, in decent restaurants, you can always ask for a pair of knife and fork, if you find the chopsticks not helpful enough.
The real difference is that in the West, you have your own plate of food, while in China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares. If you are being treated to a formal dinner and particularly if the host thinks you're in the country for the first time, he will do the best to give you a taste of many different types of dishes.
The meal usually begins with a set of at least four cold dishes, to be followed by the main courses of hot meat and vegetable dishes. Soup then will be served unless in Guangdong style restaurants to be followed by staple food ranging from rice, noodles to mplings.
If you wish to have your rice to go with other dishes, you should say so in good time, for most of the Chinese choose to have the staple food at last or have none of them at all.
Perhaps one of the things that surprises a Western visitor most is that some of the Chinese hosts like to put food into the plates of their guests. In formal dinners, there are always "public" chopsticks and spoons for this purpose, but some hosts may use their own chopsticks. This is a sign of genuine friendship and politeness. It is always polite to eat the food. If you do not eat it, just leave the food in the plate.
People in China tend to over-order food, for they will find it embarrassing if all the food is consumed. When you have had enough, just say so. Or you will always overeat!
When families gather for Christmas dinner, some will stick to formal traditions dating back to Grandma』s generation. Their tables will be set with the good dishes and silver, and the dress code will be Sunday-best.
But in many other homes, this china--and--silver elegance has given way to stoneware (粗陶)--and--stainless informality, with dresses assuming an equally casual--Friday look. For hosts and guests, the change means greater simplicity and comfort. For makers of fine china in Britain, it spells economic hard times.
Last week Royal Doulton, the largest employer in Stoke-onTrent, announced that it is eliminating 1,000 jobs--one-fifth of its total workforce. That brings to more than 4,000 the number of positions lost in 18 months in the pottery (陶瓷) region. Wedgwood and other pottery factories made cuts earlier.
Although a strong pound and weak markets in Asia play a role in the downsizing, the layoffs in Stoke have their roots in earthshaking social shifts. A spokesman for Royal Doulton admitted that the company 「has been somewhat slow in catching up with the trend」toward casual dining. Families eat together less often, he explained, and more people eat alone, either because they are single or they eat in front of television.
Even dinner parties, if they happen at all, have gone causal. In a time of long work hours and demanding family scheles, busy hosts insist, rightly, that it』s better to share a takeout pizza on paper plates inthe family room than to wait for the perfect moment or a 「real」 dinner party. Too often, the perfect moment never comes, Iron a fine-pattened tablecloth? Forget it. Polish the silver? Who has time?
Yet the loss of formality has its down side. The fine points of etiquette(禮節) that children might once have learned at the table by observation or instruction from parents and grandparents(「Chew with your mouth closed.」「keep your elbows off the table.」)must be picked up elsewhere. Some companies now offer etiquette seminars for employees who may be competent professionally but clueless socially.
Choose correct answers to the question:
1.The trend toward casual dining has resulted in ______
A. bankruptcy of fine china manufacturers
B. Shrinking of the pottery instry
C. restructuring of large enterprises
D. Economic recession in Great Britain
2.Which of the following may be the best reason for casual dining?
A. Family members need more time to relax.
B. Busy scheles leave people no time for formality.
C. People want to practice economy in times of scarcity.
D. Young people won』t follow the etiquette of the older generation.
3.It can be learned from the passage that Royal Doulton is _______
A. a retailer of stainless steel tableware
B. a dealer in stoneware
C. a pottery chain store
D. a procer of fine china
4.The main cause of the layoffs in the pottery instry is _______
A. the increased value of the pound
B. the economic recession in Asia
C. the change in people』s way of life
D. the fierce competition at home and abroad
5.Refined table manners, though less popular than before in current social life, _______
A. are still a must on certain occasions
B. are bound to return sooner or later
C. are still being taught by parents at home
D. Can help improve personal relationships
根據題目中的the layoffs找到文章第4段首句,其中的have their roots in相當於題目中的main cause is,shifts相當於C中的change。
根據最後一段,特別是第2句「The fine points of etiquette... must be picked up elsewhere良好的餐桌禮儀必須在其他地方被重拾起來」,可知禮儀在某些場合還是必要的,故答案為A。

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. The day starts at dawn on my farm,he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens. while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a hose ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. Don't be late for supper,Uncle Paul cried, and keep to the track so that you don't get lost! 'OK! ' my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his fam house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(編織的)blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.

Paragraph 1
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Instinctively, I yelled out loud, pulling back the reins hard in order to stop the horse from hurting the little creature. Badly startled by the sudden incident, the horse sped off the track into another direction. Dad followed closely behind, calling out to tell me how to soothe the terrified horse and I did as told. Finally, the horse calmed down, but we seemed to get lost, unable to go back to the mountain road.
Paragraph 2
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. Wandering around, we were still stuck in the dilemma. Much to our delight, the sound of water in the distance caught our attention and drove us to the riverbank. Dad proposed that we should walk along the river which may lead us to the farm house and nothing seemed better than that. Time appeared to be merrier and shorter when I stayed together with Dad and before long, the farm house came into sight. What a thrilling but memorable experience it was!

Li Jiang 6 July, Sunny
Our family will go on a trip next month and need a suitcase. Two days ago, Mom asked me to find relevant information on the internet. But the information I got was rich and varied, or even contradictory. Confused, I simply based my decision on the ratings. Within five minutes, we ordered the one we were satisfied with. This afternoon, Mom received the case and told me she liked it very much.
Su Hua 6 July, Sunny
This morning, our family went out, hanging round in the downtown area. We found a rating of the Top Ten Restaurants, and went into one of them. We spent quite a lot of money, but were not happy. Mom complained a lot, and said that despite its high ratings, the food was not to our taste. I was puzzled. Should I believe in these ratings, or should I not?
1. 用約30個詞概括上述利用排名(ratings)進行消費的現象;
1. 寫作過程中不能直接引用原文語句;
2. 作文中不能出現真實姓名和學校名稱;
As a major channel of consumption information, the rating is an efficient source of information for shopping in our own consumption. Interestingly, the same rating may have different influences on different consumers.
I tend to consult consumption ratings whatever I purchase. Firstly, the higher rating means the higher quality of the proct, or better service. Based on the ratings, I bought my beloved backpack, saw interesting films and tasted delicious foods. Secondly, ratings can save time to make decisions in shopping. For example, there are huge amounts of reference books which I am often confused to choose from. In that case, it is both convenient and economical to buy books according to the ratings.
There is no doubt that it is unwise to depend completely on the ratings in consumption. The advantages and disadvantages of ratings are often closely related. It is necessary to hold an objective attitude towards ratings.
Nowadays, most commodities or services are rated through certain channels. These ratings, easy to access, are playing an increasingly important role in customers' purchase decision. However, results are sometimes unsatisfactory.
There is no denying that such ratings might bring convenience to consumers, but they are often misleading and unreliable. As we all know, most of the ratings are based on others' judgment on the proct or service concerned. Every judgment comes from a specific need or a unique psychological state. Apparently, blindly following others' advice will affect our own judgment. Another fact should not be neglected that some of the ratings are the outcome of a careful manipulation of companies or sellers. It has become a common practice for some to pay for good ratings on their procts or services so as to increase their sales.
Therefore, we should give a second thought to these ratings whenever we go shopping.

China Dining Custom Table Manners The main difference beeen Chinese and western eating habits is that unlike the West, where everyone has their own plate of food, in China the dishes are placed on the table and everybody shares. If you are being treated by a Chinese host, be prepared for a ton of food. Chinese are very proud of their culture of cuisine and will do their best to show their hospitality. And sometimes the Chinese host use their chopsticks to put food in your bowl or plate. This is a sign of politeness. The appropriate thing to do would be to eat the whatever-it-is and say how yummy it is. If you feel unfortable with this, you can just say a polite thank you and leave the food there. Eating No-no's Don't stick your chopsticks upright in the rice bowl.Instead, lay them on your dish. The reason for this is that when somebody dies, the shrine to them contains a bowl of sand or rice with o sticks of incense stuck upright in it. So if you stick your chopsticks in the rice bowl, it looks like this shrine and is equivalent to wishing death upon a person at the table! Make sure the spout of the teapot is not facing anyone. It is impolite to set the teapot down where the spout is facing towards somebody. The spout should always be directed to where nobody is sitting, usually just ouard from the table. Don't tap on your bowl with your chopsticks.Beggars tap on their bowls, so this is not polite. Also, when the food is ing too slow in a restarant, people will tap their bowls.
In china, it is customary to pick up food for your guests, or anyone else dining with you. Whereas this may surprise foreigners, as dining is more indivialistic in the West, it is a long-standing tradition and act of courtesy and consideration for Chinese people. It is seen to be taking care of others when you pick up a delicacy with your own chopsticks and put it in someone else's bowl. In this way, sharing of food is promoted and there is a closer connection to the people you are dining with. As people bee more aware of hygiene, using one's own chopsticks is bee less mon, and most of the time, a munal server is used instead. However, this tradition is still being practised today, in most social dining events and even at home to show care and hospitality.

Dietary Changes and Health CareAs is shown in the graph, China's food distribution has taken great changes from 1960's to 1990's According to this statistics of cereals, vegetable, meat, and fruits, the number of those who eat rice, flour or vegetable has greatly decreased in the past four decades. In contrast of this the number of those who eat oil or meat has sharply increased. From such dietary changes, we can perceive the rapid improvement of our people' s living standard. Why does this improvement occur? Therefore, we think it necessary for the Chinese to be aware of the balanced diets: Lots of vegetable and meat, which may gain us healthier bodies in the new
