語義否定了之前的描述——……brain power more must be better 。
直白來說brain is powerful ,physically weak。
1.迅速將整篇文章分解,理出文章結構;
2.迅速抓住文章敘述的主題;
一般第一段為主題段,也就是說,整篇文章要表達的主題一定會出現在這里,你要做的就是迅速把中心句找出來,一般來說,中心句會出現在倒數第2句或第1句,簡單一點的文章會在第1句就出現,如果考題出得比較難,也可能需要自己總結,但就算需要自己總結中心句,也一定能在該段落中找出代表中心意思的詞;
接下來第二、三、四段,各段將對第一段提出的主題意思進行論述或分步驟分析,也就是說,每個段落都會有進階的主題,即個各分論點,所以你要做的同樣是迅速把它們找出來,位置和方法相同;

Most damagingly, anger weakens a person』s ability to think clearly and keep control over his behaviour. The angry person loses objectivity in evaluating the emotional significance of the person or situation that arouses his anger.
Not everyone experiences anger in the same way; what angers one person may amuse another. The specific expression of anger also differs from person to person based on biological and cultural forces. In contemporary culture, physical expressions of anger are generally considered too socially harmful to be tolerated. We no longer regard els as an appropriate expression of anger resulting from one person』s awareness of insulting behaviour on the part of another.
Anger can be identified in the brain, where the electrical activity changes. Under most conditions EEG measures of electrical activity show balanced activity between the right and left prefrontal areas. Behaviourally this corresponds to the general even-handed disposition that most of us possess most of the time. But when we are angry the EEG of the right and left prefrontal areas aren』t balanced and, as a result of this, we』re likely to react. And our behavioural response to anger is different from our response to other emotions, whether positive or negative.
Most positive emotions are associated with approach behaviour: we move closer to people we like. Most negative emotions, in contrast, are associated with avoidance behaviour: we move away from people and things that we dislike or that make us anxious. But anger is an exception to this pattern. The angrier we are, the more likely we are to move towards the object of our anger. This corresponds to what psychologists refer to as offensive anger: the angry person moves closer in order to influence and control the person or situation causing his anger. This approach-and-confront behaviour is accompanied by a leftward prefrontal asymmetry of EEG activity. Interestingly, this asymmetry lessens if the angry person can experience empathy towards the indivial who is bringing forth the angry response. In defensive anger, in contrast, the EEG asymmetry is directed to the right and the angry person feels helpless in the face of the anger-inspiring situation.

Sometimes it's hard to let go 放手 . For many British people, that can apply to 應用於 institutions and objects that represent their country's past — age-old 古老的 castles, splendid華麗的 homes ... and red phone boxes 紅色電話亭 .
Beaten first by the march of (the march of sth ...的穩步發展) technology and lately by the terrible weather in junkyards (廢品場) , the phone boxes representative of(be representative of sth/sb 典型的;有代表性的) an age are now making something of a comeback 再度流行 . Adapted in imaginative ways, many have reappeared on city streets and village greens housing tiny cafes, cellphone repair shops, or even defibrillator machines (除顫器).
The original iron boxes with the round roofs first appeared in 1926. They were designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect 建築師 of the Battersea Power Station in London. After becoming an important part of many British streets, the phone boxes began disappearing in the 1980s, with the rise of the mobile phone sending most of them away to the junkyards.
About that time, Tony Inglis' engineering and transport company got the job to remove phone boxes from the streets and sell them out (sell out 售空) . But Inglis ended up(end up doing sth 以...結束) buying hundreds of them himself, with the idea of repairing and selling them. He said that he had heard the calls 聽到召喚 to preserve the boxes and had seen how some of them were listed as historic buildings 歷史性建築 .
As Inglis and, later other businessmen, got to work, repurposed(repurpose v. 稍加修改) phone boxes began reappearing in cities and villages as people found new uses for them . Today, they are once again 再一次 a familiar sight 熟悉的場景 , playing roles 扮演角色 that are often just as important for the community as their original purpose.

For those who can stomach (v. 能吃,吃得下) it, working out(work out 運動,鍛煉) before breakfast may be more beneficial for health than eating first, according to a study of meal timing and physical activity .
Athletes and scientists have long known that meal timing affects performance. However, far less has been known about how meal timing and exercise might affect general health
To find out, British scientists concted a study They first found 10 overweight and inactive but otherwise healthy young men, whose lifestyles are, for better and worse, representative of those of most of us. They tested the men's fitness and resting metabolic (新陳代謝的) rates and took samples (樣品) of their blood and fat tissue 脂肪組織.

Before one of these workouts , the men skipped breakfast 不吃早餐 , meaning that they exercised on a completely empty stomach after a long overnight fast (禁食) . On the other occasion, they ate a rich morning meal about two hours before they started walking.

I was in the middle of the Amazon (亞馬遜) with my wife, who was there as a medical researcher. We flew on a small plane to a faraway village偏遠鄉村 . We did not speak the local language 說本地話 , did not know the customs, and more often than not 常常 , did not entirely recognize the food. We could not have felt more foreign 陌生的 .
We were raised on books and computers, highways and cell phones, but now we were living in a village without running water自來水 or electricity . It was easy for us to go to sleep at the end of the day feeling a little misunderstood.
Then one perfect Amazonian evening, with monkeys calling from beyond the village green, we played soccer 踢足球. I am not good at soccer, but that evening it was wonderful. Everyone knew the rules. We all spoke the same language of passes and shots. We understood one another perfectly. As darkness came over the field and the match ended, the goalkeeper 記分員 , Juan, walked over to me and said in a matter-of-fact way 平靜地 , "In your home, do you have a moon too?" I was surprised.
After I explained to Juan that yes, we did have a moon and yes, it was very similar to 與... 非常相似 his, I felt a sort of awe (敬畏) at the possibilities that existed in his world. In Juan's world, each village could have its own moon. In Juan's world, the unknown and undiscovered was vast and marvelous Anything was possible.
In our society 在我們的社會, we know that Earth has only one moon. We have looked at our planet from every angle and found all of the wildest things left to find. I can, from my computer at home, pull up satellite images of Juan's village. There are no more continents and no more moons to search for, little left to discover. At least it seems that way.
Yet, as I thought about思考 Juan's question, I was not sure how much more we could really rule out 不考慮 . I am, in part 某種程度上 , an ant biologist, so my thoughts turned to what we know about了解 insect life and I knew that much in the world of insects remains unknown . How much, though? How ignorant (無知的) are we? The question of what we know and do not know constantly bothered me 一直困擾著我.

I began a second drawer for more general discoveries: a new cave system discovered with dozens of 許多 nameless species, four hundred species of bacteria found in the human stomach. The second drawer began to fill and as it did, I wondered whether there were bigger discoveries out there, not just species, but the life that depends on things thought to be useless, life even without DNA. I started the third drawer for these big discoveries . It fills more slowly, but all the same 依舊 , it fills.
In在做...的過程中 looking into the stories of biological discovery, I also began to find something else, a collection of scientists, usually brilliant, occasionally half-mad, who made the discoveries . Those scientists very often see the same things that other scientists see, but they pay more attention to them, and they focus on them to the point of exhaustion (窮盡) , and at the risk of the ridicule 嘲笑 of their peers. In looking for the stories of discovery, I found the stories of these people and how their lives changed our view of the world.
We are repeatedly willing to (be willing to do sth 願意做某事) imagine we have found most of what is left to discover. We used to (used to do sth 過去常做某事) think that insects were the smallest organisms (生物) and that nothing lived deeper than six hundred meters. Yet, when something new turns up 出現, more often than not , we do not even know its name.

It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College, career, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit of the dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.
Over the phone, his mother told him, 「Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday.」 Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.
「Jack, did you hear me?」
「Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. it』s been so long since I thought of him. I』m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,」 Jack said.
「Well, he didn』t forget you. Every time I saw him he』d ask how you were doing. He』d reminisce about the many days you spent over 『his side of the fence』 as he put it, 」 Mom told him.
「I loved that old house he lived in,」 Jack said.
「You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man』s influence in your life,」 she said.
「He』s the one who taught me carpentry. I wouldn』t be in this business if it weren』t for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important. Mom, I』ll be there for the funeral.」 Jack said.
Busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser』s funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.
The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture … Jack stopped suddenly.
「What』s wrong, Jack?」 his Mom asked.
「The box is gone,」 he said.
「What box?」 Mom asked.
「There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he』d ever tell me was 『the thing I value most』,」 Jack said.
It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.
「Now I』ll never know what was so valuable to him,」 Jack said sadly.
Returning to his office the next day, he found a package on his desk. The return address caught his attention.
「Mr. Harold Belser」 it read.
Jack tore open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack』s hands shook as he read the note inside,
「Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bernett. It』s the thing I valued most in my life.」 A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, and tears filling his eyes. Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch. Running his fingers slowly over the fine cover, he opened it.
Inside he found these words carved: 「Jack. Thanks for your time! Harold Belser.」
「Oh. My God! This is the thing he valued most …」
Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his assistant and cleared his appointments for the next two days. 「Why?」 his assistant asked.
「I need some time to spend with my son,」 he said.
Mark Twain has been called the inventor of the American novel. And he surely deserves additional praise: the man who popularized the clever literary attack on racism.
I say clever because anti-slavery fiction had been the important part of the literature in the years before the Civil War. H. B. Stowe』s Uncle Tom』s Cabin is only the most famous example. These early stories dealt directly with slavery. With minor exceptions, Twain planted his attacks on slavery and prejudice into tales that were on the surface about something else entirely. He drew his readers into the argument by drawing them into the story.
Again and again, in the postwar years, Twain seemed forced to deal with the challenge of race. Consider the most controversial, at least today, of Twain』s novels, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn . Only a few books have been kicked off the shelves as often as Huckleberry Finn , Twain』s most widely read tale. Once upon a time, people hated the book because it struck the mass rude. Twain himself wrote that those who banned the book considered the novel 「trash and suitable only for the slums」. More recently the book has been attacked because of the character Jim, the escaped slave, and many occurrences of the word nigger. (The term Nigger Jim, for which the novel is often severely criticized, never appears in it.)
But the attacks were and are silly—and miss the point. The novel is strongly anti-slavery. Jim』s search through the slave states for the family from whom he has been forcibly parted is heroic. As J. Chadwick has pointed out, the character of Jim was a first in American fiction — a recognition that the slave had two personalities, 「the voice of survival within a white slave culture and the voice of the indivial: Jim, the father and the man.」
There is much more. Twain』s mystery novel Pudd』nhead Wilson stood as a challenge to the racial beliefs of even many of the liberals of his day. Written at a time when the accepted wisdom held Negroes to be inferior to whites, especially in intelligence, Twain』s tale centered in part around two babies switched at birth. A slave gave birth to her master』s baby and, for fear that the child should be sold south, switched him for the master』s baby by his wife. The slave』s light-skinned child was taken to be white and grew up with both the attitudes and the ecation of the slave-holding class. The master』s wife』s baby was taken for black and grew up with the attitudes and intonations of the slave.
The point was difficult to miss: nurture, not nature, was the key to social status. The features of the black man that provided the stuff of prejudice—manner of speech, for example—were,to Twain, indicative of nothing other than the conditioning that slavery forced on its victims.
Twain』s racial was not perfect . One is left uneasy, for example, by the lengthy passage in his autobiography about how much he loved what were called 「nigger shows」 in his youth--mostly with white men performing in black-face---and his delight in getting his mother to laugh at them. Yet there is no reason to think Twain saw the shows as representing reality. His frequent attacks on slavery and prejudice suggest his keen awareness that they did not.
Was Twain a racist? Asking the questioning the 21st century is as wise as asking the same of Lincoln. If we read the words and attitudes of the past through the 「wisdom」 of the considered moral judgments of the present, we will find nothing but error. Lincoln, who believed the black man the inferior of the white, fought and won a war to free him. And Twain, raised in a slave state, briefly a soldier, and inventor of Jim, may have done more to anger the nation over racial injustice and awaken its collective conscience than any other novelist in the past century.
5個W代表 when,where,who,what,why;1個H即how。 According to the passage,5W or 1H(when, where, who, what, why, how)________?Which of the following is typical of…?What is unique of…?例如:What are you encouraged to do when travelling in New Zealand?(2015江蘇高考57題)Which of the following is typical of offensive anger?(2014江蘇高考63題)題干中常出現一些表示人名、地名的專有名詞;表示年份、數字、百分數等數詞;大寫的名詞等定位詞。例如:Why is June 6,1990 a special day for Mommy?(2014江蘇高考65題)What can we learn from the Florida study?(2015江蘇高考62題)解題時,學生可採用讀題干、選項→讀文章→做題目的方式,通過題干定位詞,找出原文中與正確選項匹配的同義表述,確定正確選項。
By mentioning the Swiss study, the author intends to tell us that ________.(2015江蘇高考58題)What can be inferred from Mommy's Anglo family life?(2014江蘇高考68題)解題原則為立足原文推論,忌摻雜主觀臆斷。
Consider that most famous economic rule of all:There's no such thing as a free lunch. Even if someone offers to take you out to lunch for free, the time you will spend in the restaurant still costs you something in terms of forgone opportunities.
A Swiss study reported that while the weight of electronic goods represented by precious metals was relatively small in comparison to total waste, the concentration(含量) of gold and other precious metals was higher in so-called e-waste than in naturally occurring minerals.(2015江蘇高考閱讀B節選)分析:整句主幹:“A Swiss study reported that…”(剩餘部分為that引導賓語從句)賓語從句中主幹:“the concentration of gold…occurring minerals.”“while the weight…to total waste”為賓語從句中的讓步狀語從句。其中“represented by precious metals”為定語修飾“the weight of electronic goods”“in comparison to total waste”為比較狀語。
