中学生的学习生活比较紧凑，为了对付升学考试，在学校和家长的压力下，整天围绕着教科书或教辅读物打转，整天钻在各种作业、练习题或试卷中。他们实际上用来课外阅读的时间很少，根据一项调查表明，每天能用1小时阅读课外书的学生不到15%，能够阅读半小时的学生也没有超过30%。他们在星期天与节假日里进行的课外阅读实际上只是课内阅读的变种而已，受到外界因素很大的干扰，是缺乏主动性与积极性的。课业负担沉重，能够自己支配的时间少，加上特殊的年龄阶段，只有少数的学生能够有目的深入阅读，并钻研其中一些问题，多数的学生只是满足于书中情节或兴趣，只图于内容的大致了解，这些并不是好的阅读习惯。只有一个经常性，连续性的阅读过程，才能培养形成好的阅读习惯。只有养成经常性阅读习惯，才会有平衡的读书收获。
2、课外阅读倾向的偏差
现在的中学生喜欢读哪些书呢？如果排除其他因素干扰，完全从自己的爱好出发，那么我们会发现中学生们的阅读兴趣是丰富多样的，他们大多喜欢科幻、散文随笔、卡通漫画、童话等题材的书籍。可是，也有一部分学生只把心思放在武侠、言情小说中。眼下的言情、武侠小说已不再是港台式的天下，大陆产的也是扑天盖地，特别是又有另一种形态的网络言情小说，这些都迷得他们团团转。最近图书市场又出现一些另类书籍或称为“口袋书”，内容都是即粗俗又无聊，甚至是充斥色情与暴力的。很多的学生也很快地看上瘾了，认为是潮流与时髦，放着学校图书馆的书不借，跑到外面猛租来看。而众多的国内外名著犹如昨日黄花，已然不是很受欢迎。对中学生而言，这些名著看起来很吃力，太难了，也看不太懂，更多的学生只是把阅读名著看成是老师布置的课外作业来完成。在应试教育的压力下，受社会流俗和大众传媒的影响，许多学生的阅读兴趣的倾向已出现了偏差。
3、没有制定读书计划
课外书籍浩如烟海，鱼龙混杂，并非每一本书都对中学生有价值。由于中学生的年龄特点，阅读带有很大的随意性和盲目性，往往只凭个人兴趣去阅读，或心血来潮，或随波逐流，有什么书就看什么书，看一本是一本，泛泛而读，不注意加以选择，这是没有计划的读书。很多的中学生因为读书没有计划，不仅造成了时间上的浪费，而且使读书缺乏系统性，读书效率不高，结果只是吸收了些杂乱无章的东西。鉴于中学生的求知欲旺盛，如果有科学的，完整的计划读一批有质量的书，肯定会使他们受益匪浅的。为此，教育部颁布最新教学大纲，第一次明确指定中学生课外文学必读的30种文学名著和中学古诗词背诵篇目，并具体规定初、高中学生的阅读总量。这种推荐是有计划的阅读，但需要有教师的正确指导才能较好地实行。
4、没有做好读书笔记
有一大部份中学生有这样的体验，当提起笔在写作文要旁征博引时，不能引出个子丑寅卯；当与别人辨论要引经据典时，却要搜肠括肚，尴尬之极。这种情况普遍的存在，主要原因是没有做好读书笔记。他们在读书的时候，没有做到既动脑又动手，懒得动手写读书笔记，只是看过则已，而后就不知所云了。俗话说，好记性不如勤笔头，经常撰写读书笔记有利于积累知识，贮存阅读材料，能够加深理解，增强记忆，促进思维从而推陈出新。中学生应该养成“不动笔墨不看书”的习惯，读书时，对书中的格言警句、成语典故、优美词语进行摘录，或者把自己的体会、意见写成心得体会或书评。现在有78%的中学生不能做到这一点，还未掌握这种正确的读书方法，只停留于走马观花。
