范文:

Academic Dishonesty on Campus

It is shown in the recent surveys that many college students papers from the Internet to save the trouble of doing their homework. In my opinion, this kind of academic dishonesty is very harmful to these students.

First, ing papers from the Internet makes students lazy. Copying papers from the Internet seems easy and can save some time and trouble, therefore, students will do this more and more often and seldom work hard to complete their papers on their own. In other word, students will become lazier and lazier. Second. students can lean little from ing others’ work. Students cannot improve their abilities just by downloading papers from the Internet without their own thinking and working. What’s worse, once students get used to academic cheating, they may also cheat in other cases in the future, which will be very dangerous for them.

To prevent academic dishonesty on campus, some punishment by the school may be necessary. But the most important thing is that teachers should talk to those students, and make them aware of the fact that ing others’ work cannot bring them any knowledge and that only by working hard can they improve themselves.

SECTION B NOTE-WRITING

The number of applicants for civil servants has increased abruptly in recent years. Many people believe it is an appealing job, while others don't think so. What is your opinion?

Is Civil Servant an Ideal Job?

You are to write in three parts.

In the first part, state specifically what your opinion is.

In the second part, support your opinion with appropriate details.

In the last part, bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary.

Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the instructions may result in a loss of marks.

SECTION B NOTE-WRITING

Write on ANSWER SHEET THREE a note of about 50-60 words based on the following situation:

You have just received a phone call from your mother at the" hospital. She is ill and you must get there right away. Write a note to your teacher to ask for leave.

Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness.

范文:

Is Civil Servant an Ideal Job?

Every year the number of applicants for government position vacancies increases sharply. Many people believe that being a civil servant is very nice because working for the government can bring you with comparatively higher and steadier salary, better welfare, and more comfortable working conditions. While others argue that a civil servant's work often prevents one from bringing his strongpoint into full play. In my opinion, civil servant is not a wise choice for some people.

First, civil servant is not an ideal job for those people with active characters. A civil servant's work is somehow regular and boring, so an active person may not stand doing almost the same work day after day and year after year. Second, civil servant is not a good choice for those people with creative talent. These people can do much better and contribute more in a creative job, such as becoming a drawer or a composer. And I cannot imagine what a tragedy it will be if a talented dancer puts away her beloved dance shoes, or a mathematician leaves his lovely numbers, just to rush for a high-paid position of civil servants.

Civil servant positions are not suitable for some people, so please look before you leap to apply for these jobs.

SECTION A COMPOSITION

Are Western Festivals Undermining Chinese Culture?

In recent years, more and more young people have been fascinated to celebrate western festivals, such as Valentine's Day and Christmas. However, many young people don't remember traditional Chinese festivals like Dragon Boat Festival and Festival of Lanterns. Some people, therefore, worry that western festivals are undermining Chinese culture. But in my opinion, this will not happen.

I believe that Chinese culture will be kept well. First, young people like to celebrate western festivals just because these festivals are fresh and interesting to them. When they get used to them, they will lose their interest in them. While the traditional Chinese festivals will be celebrated no~ matter whether people are interested or not, because it's our own culture. Second, our country has set these traditional Chinese festivals as legal holidays so that people can have several days off from their work. People, especially young ones, like to have holidays on which they don't need to go to school or work. Therefore, they will be counting the days when a traditional Chinese festival is coming and planning how to celebrate the festival.

In one word, western festivals will not undermine Chinese culture, but just add some fun into our daily lives.

SECTION A COMPOSITION

On Dormitories Security

It is reported that recently in quite a few universities, dormitories on campus have been broken into and burglaries have happened every now and then. Students have complained a lot that burglaries are like nightmares in their college years. I think it's high time that both students and universities did something to rece and eliminate this kind of crime.

On the one hand, there are some measures which universities can take. First, universities should have all the dormitory doors and windows checked, find out and repair the broken ones so that thieves cannot go in easily. Second, the number of university security staff should be increased. Security personnel should patrol on campus and cross-question any suspicious person. On the other hand, students should also do something to protect their belongings. First, when they leave their dormitories, they should keep doors and windows locked to keep out sneak thieves. Second, students should lock their valuables up in lockers. In this way, they can rece the risks of burglaries happening.

In one word, both students and universities should do something to rece burglaries in dormitories. And only in a safe dormitory can a student lives and studies happily.

注:本文摘自 《英语学习四十年精选之异域风情 + 国外风情面面观》

Predicting the future is always risky. But it's probably safe to say that at
least a few historians will one day speak of the 20th century as America's “
Disney era ” . Today, it's certainly difficult to think of any other single
thing that represents modern America as powerfully as the company that created
Mickey Mouse. Globally, brands like Coca-Cola and McDonalds may be more
widely-known, but neither encapsulates 20th-century America in quite the same
way as Disney.

The reasons for Disney's success are varied and numerous, but ultimately the
credit belongs to one person — the man who created the cartoon and built the
company from nothing, Walt Disney. Ironically, he could not draw particularly
well. But he was a genius in plenty of other respects. In business, his greatest
skills were his insight and his management ability. After setting himself up in
Hollywood, he single-handedly pioneered the concepts of branding and
merchandising — something his company still does brilliantly today.

But what really distinguished Disney was his ability to identify with his
audiences. Disney always made sure his films championed the “ little guy ” , and
made him feel proud to be American. This he achieved by creating characters that
reflected the hopes and fears of ordinary people. Some celebrated American
achievements — Disney's very first cartoon Plane Crazy, featuring a silent
Mickey Mouse, was inspired by Charles Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic.
Others, like the There Little Pigs and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, showed
how, through hard work and helping one's fellow man, or Americans could survive
social and economic crises like the Great Depression.

Disney's other great virtue was the fact that his company — unlike other big
corporations — had a human face. His Hollywood studio — the public heard —
operated just like a democracy, where everyone was on firstname terms and had a
say in how things should be run. He was also regarded as a great patriot because
not only did his cartoons celebrate America, but, ring World War II, studios
made training films for American soldiers.

The reality, of course, was less idyllic. As the public would later learn,
Disney's patriotism had an unpleasant side. After a strike by cartoonists in
1941, he became convinced that Hollywood had been infiltrated by Communists. He
agreed to work for the FBI as a mole, identifying and spying on colleagues whom
he suspected were subversives.

But, apart from his affiliations with the FBI, Disney was more or less the
genuine article. A new book, The Magic Kingdom; Walt Disney and the American Way
of Life, by Steven Watts, confirms that he was very definitely on the side of
ordinary Americans — in the 30s and 40s he voted for Franklin Roosevelt,
believing he was a champion of the workers. Also, Disney was not an apologist
for the FBI, as some have suggested. In fact, he was always suspicious of large,
bureaucratic organizations, as is evidenced in films like That Darned Cat, in
which he portrayed FBI agents as bungling incompetents.

By the time he died in 1966, Walt Disney was an icon like Thomas Edison and
the Wright Brothers. To business people and filmmakers, he was a role model; to
the public at large, he was “ Uncle Walt ”— the man who had entertained them all
their lives, the man who represented them all their lives, the man who
represented all that was good about America.

86. Walt Disney is believed to possess the following abilities EXCEPT
A. painting.
B. creativity
C. management.
D. merchandising.

87. According to the passage, what was the pleasant side of Disney’s patriotism?
A. He sided with ordinary Americans in his films.
B. He supported America’s war efforts in his own way.
C. He had doubts about large, bureaucratic organizations.
D. He voted for Franklin Roosevelt in the 30s and 40s.

88. In the sixth paragraph the sentence “Disney was more or less the genuine
article” means that
A. Disney was a creative and capable person.
B. Disney once agreed to work for the FBI.
C. Disney ran his company in a democratic way.
D. Disney was sympathetic with ordinary people.

89. The writer’s attitude toward Walt Disney can best be described as
A. sympathetic.
B. objective.
C. critical.
D. skeptical.

New Year’s parties can take place in different places. Some people hold a house party; others attend street parties, while some just go for a few drinks with their friends. 第一篇:

What we know of prenatal development makes all this attempt made by a mother to mold the character of her unborn child by studying poetry, art, or mathematics ring pregnancy seem utterly impossible. How could such extremely complex influences pass from the mother to the child? There is no connection between their nervous systems. Even the blood vessels of mother and child do not join directly. An emotional shock to the mother will affect her child, because it changes the activity of her glands and so the chemistry her blood. Any chemical change in the mother's blood will affect the child for better or worse. But we can not see how a looking for mathematics or poetic genius can be dissolved in blood and proce a similar liking or genius in the child.

In our discussion of instincts we saw that there was reason to believe that whatever we inherit must be of some very simple sort rather than any complicated or very definite kind of behavior. It is certain that no one inherits a knowledge of mathematics. It may be, however, that children inherit more or less of a rather general ability that we may call intelligence. If very intelligent children become deeply interested in mathematics, they will probably make a success of that study.

As for musical ability, it may be that what is inherited is an especially sensitive ear, a peculiar structure of the hands or the vocal organs connections between nerves and muscles that make it comparatively easy to learn the movements a musician must execute, and particularly vigorous emotions. If these factors are all organized around music, the child may become a musician. The same factors, in other circumstance might be organized about some other center of interest. The rich emotional equipment might find expression in poetry. The capable fingers might develop skill in surgery. It is not the knowledge of music that is inherited, then nor even the love of it, but a certain bodily structure that makes it comparatively easy to acquire musical knowledge and skill. Whether that ability shall be directed toward music or some other undertaking may be decided entirely by forces in the environment in which a child grows up.

第二篇:

The case for college has been accepted without question for more than a generation. All high school graates ought to go, says conventional wisdom and statistical evidence, because college will help them earn more money, become "better" people, and learn to be more responsible citizens than those who don't go.

But college has never been able to work its magic for everyone. And now that close to half our high school graates are attending, those who don't fit the pattern are becoming more numerous, and more obvious. College graates are selling shoes and driving taxis; college students interfere with each other's experiments and write false letters of recommendation in the intense competition for admission to graate school. Other find no stimulation in their studies, and drop out—often encouraged by college administrators.

Some observers say the fault is with the young people themselves—they are spoiled and they are expecting too much. But that is a condemnation of the students as a whole, and doesn't explain all campus unhappiness. Others blame the state of the world, and they are partly right. We have been told that young people have to go to college because our economy can't absorb an army of untrained eighteen-year-olds. But disappointed graates are learning that it can no longer absorb an army of trained twenty-two-year-olds, either.

Some adventuresome ecators and watchers have openly begun to suggest that college may not be the best, the proper, the only place for every young person after the completion of high school. We may have been looking at all those surveys and statistics upside down, it seems, and through the rosy glow of our own remembered college experiences. Perhaps college doesn't make people intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, or quick to learn things—may it is just the other way around, and intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, quick-learning people are merely the ones who have been attracted to college in the first place. And perhaps all those successful college graates would have been successful whether they had gone to college or not. This is heresy to those of us who have been brought up to believe that if a little schooling is good, more has to be much better. But contrary evidence is beginning to mount up.

1.According to the author, ___.

A.people used to question the value of college ecation.

B.people used to have full confidence in higher ecation.

C.all high school graates went to college.

D.very few high school graates chose to go to college.

2.In the 2nd paragraph, "those who don't fit the pattern" refer to___.

A.high school graates who aren't suitable for college ecation.

B.college graates who are selling shoes and driving taxis.

C.college students who aren't any better for their higher ecation.

D.high school graates who failed to be admitted to college.

3.The dropout rate of college students seems to go up because___.

A.young people are disappointed with the conventional way of teaching at college.

B.many people are required to join the army.

C.young people have little motivation in pursuing a higher ecation.

D.young people don't like the intense competition for admission to graate school.

4.According to the passage, the problems of college ecation partly originate in the fact that___.

A.society cannot provide enough jobs for properly trained graates.

B.High school graates do not fit the pattern of college ecation.

C.Too many students have to earn their own living.

D.College administrators encourage students to drop out.

5.In this passage the author argues that___.

A.more and more evidence shows college ecation may not be the best thing for high school graates.

B.College ecation is not enough if one wants to be successful.

C.College ecation benefits only the intelligent, ambitious, and quick-learning people.

D.Intelligent people may learn quicker if they don't go to college.

As the merchant class expanded in the eighteenth?century North American Colonies, the silversmith and the coppersmith businesses rose to serve it. Only a few silversmiths were available in New York or Boston in the late seventeenth century, but in the eighteenth century they could be found in all major colonial cities. No other colonial artisans rivaled the silversmiths’ prestige. They handled the most expensive materials and possessed direct connections to prosperous colonial merchants. Their procts, primarily silver plates and bowls, reflected their exalted status and testified to their customers’ prominence. Silver stood as one of the surest ways to store wealth at a time before neighborhood banks existed. Unlike the silver coins from which they were made, silver articles were readily identifiable. Often formed to indivial specifications, they always carried the silversmith’s distinctive markings and consequently could be traced and retrieved. Customers generally secure the silver for the silver object they ordered. They saved coins, took them to smiths, and discussed the type of pieces they desired. Silversmiths complied with these requests by melting the money in a small furnace, adding a bit of copper to form a stronger alloy, and casting the alloy in rectangular blocks. They hammered these ingots to the appropriate thickness by hand, shaped them and pressed designs into them for adornment. Engraving was also done by hand. In addition to plates and bowls, some customers sought more intricate procts, such as silver teapots. These were made by shaping or casting parts separately and then soldering them together. Colonial coppersmithing also come of age in the early eighteenth century and prospered in northern cities. Copper’s ability to conct heat efficiently and to resist corrosion contributed to its attractiveness. But because it was expensive in colonial America, coppersmiths were never very numerous. Virtually all copper worked by Smiths was imported as sheets or obtained by recycling old copper goods. Copper was used for practical items, but it was not admired for its beauty. Coppersmiths employed it to fashion pots and kettles for the home. They shaped it in much the same manner as silver or melted it in a foundry with lead or tin. They also mixed it with zinc to make brass for maritime and scientific instruments.?
