说起英语阅读,顿觉眼前一黑,密密麻麻,只有它认识你没有你认识它的份,不像咱方块字,没见过也能猜个大概——也许这就是文字形式高度抽象的代价——形声意风马牛不相及。这还不是最冤的,因为搞不清chore和chaos,toxic和tonic的大有人在;有苦说不出的是看懂了每个单词(真的,每个单词都认识,千古难逢哪!),怎么放在一起就看不出个一二三四?好容易捉摸出个大概,怎么偏偏又跟它的原创爸爸妈妈想的天差地别?明明看得同一句话,答案却是五花八门? 为什么英语就不能抛弃它的循环结构,尤其是那一个又一个的that从句,真是恐怖,就像俄罗斯的套娃漂亮精致,散落开来却能花了你的眼,搞不清来龙去脉;为什么英语就不能明明白白说说it, he, they到底是谁或是什么,偷懒也不是这么个偷法;为什么英语就不能说一是一,说二是二,还要我们read between the lines,夹在现实与想象之间何其痛苦! 让我们以“大山不向你走来,你就向大山走去”的大无畏精神去迎战英语。当然,不打毫无准备的仗,我们的目的是把眼中钉变成apple of the eye,把心底的痛变成sweet heart,因此首先我们需要足够的词汇量。为什么是足够,而不是大量的?因为“足够”因人而异。碰到生词拒绝词典的人通常需要的词汇量少一些,因为他们乐于接受不确定性的挑战,愿意根据前文后意猜个大概,愿意接受不幸理解错误的失败,这样他们就不会因为看到许多生词而“出师未捷身先死”!很多学生把背单词书甚至是字典奉为学习英语之必备途径(当然它们的作用也是不可忽略的),但是孤立的背诵面对“浴缸效应”和“短时记忆如何转化为长时记忆”这两座大山时明显底气不足。有一语言学家为学德文来到德国,把自己关在房间里拼命背字典,半年之后自我感觉很好,参加考试,不过;回去再用功,还是不过!终于放弃回国却发现原本咿咿呀呀的小侄子现在都能流利的教训人了——最大的区别在于交流使用。狂背表面看来主动,其实却是被动——你只是被迫将那些字母组合强行刻入大脑皮层的某一区域,往往是临时文件夹,一合上书就跟关机一样临时文件统统清空,再次碰到却发现交通阻塞,快捷键失效,大脑一片空白……终于发现即使是背单词也应该有选择、有策略,想想老外口袋里装满“老虎”、“狮子”的卡片有多可笑,就知道自己现在跟daffodil、guinea pig较劲有多无聊,你最好关注常用和抽象的名词,因为太细致的你都没地方用;动词和副词也不容忽视。策略就在于:找到最适合自己的记单词法。有人喜欢狂抄,有人喜欢听写,有人喜欢把单词在脑中想象成小狗小猫,有人喜欢建立同义词库,有人喜欢阅读,有人喜欢注意大街小巷的各种品牌……分开来看,每种方法都微不足道;合在一起呢?It’s up to you to find out! 其实并不是要词汇量完全武装好了才能进行阅读,因为认识每个单词并不意味着能理解全文,理解全文也不必认识每一个单词。从心理学角度而言,阅读是判断、推理、归纳、总结、想象的过程。这难免要提到枯燥的同义词——语法。很多人将看不懂文章归到语法不好,如果语法会说话,它一定会叫屈。要把“没”和“无”的区别讲讲清楚,学中文的老外很可能比我们分析得还头头是道,不过学中文他们还得叫我们“老师”,可见语法不一定要搞得一清二楚才能看懂莎士比亚的《哈姆雷特》,但清楚点总有好处,不会犯下老外认为上海人很喜欢说“呀”举出的例子却是“我们去吃烤鸭。”这种错误。 在观念上推翻词汇和语法两大绝对权威之后,我们需要注意的是逻辑。英语经典论文你可以说它乏味可陈,每个单词、每个句子像是红木家具中归中矩;但你不得不佩服它的逻辑缜密如福尔摩斯破案般环环相扣、天衣无缝。是它内在的逻辑性促成了它频繁使用代词、从句以及等级森严的文章结构;还是后者们造就了前者属于鸡生蛋蛋生鸡的问题不在讨论之列,但英语文章严密的逻辑性对读者来说是好事,降低了预测的风险。相比中文的散文,英文的“神”恐怕更好把握一些,无非就是搞清楚谁主谁从、谁因谁果、谁先谁后、谁大谁小。说来容易,做起来不仅需要词汇、语法,还要大量相关的背景知识,光看懂每个字没用,充其量是知道了一个事实,对经济毫无概念的人是不会明白“人民币升值对中国老百姓的长远生活没好处”的,知其然而不知其所以然是很容易被题目问倒的,因为这样的信息只能充当传声筒。所以,阅读的时候多问自己几个“为什么”,就会发现要读出作者的言外之意并非蜀道之行。 其实每一篇阅读文章都不仅仅是选择题或问答题的载体,我从阅读的文章中知道了梁龙虽然脖子长,但却不像长颈鹿那样优雅的吃树顶上的嫩叶,而是像割草机一样刷过草皮;我了解了大脑干细胞的潜力,比较了英美教育的差异,更重要的是我发现每当得到新信息后,就会在生活中、电视上“很巧合”的看到相关的内容,因此感到非常兴奋。其实细细想来,这种偶然是必然的,我们的生活充斥着各种各样的信息,而我们的有意注意却是有限的;文章让我们对某些信息比较敏感,于是就会注意到一直存在却不曾留意的东西,奇特的是你会特有成就感,就像刚背完的单词突然在自己的T-shirt上发现一样。就这样,将阅读的每一段文字与自己、与身边的生活联系起来,无论是把它当作启示、消遣还是批判对象,只要与它发生互动作用,就会让英语阅读成为一种乐趣,因为你至少有了一点儿控制权,而它至少有了点除完成题目之外的意义。 也许对众多学子而言,英文就是高高在上、曲高和寡的圣女。遥望她无限向往,征服她需要翻山越岭,得不到她恨得牙痒痒,放弃她又心有不甘。其实,魔障在你心中,你曾经盯着错误的目标、用错误的方法得到了错误的结论;现在你发现,原来你一直不了解她,也不了解你自己。她就是这么普通,有浪漫的感性和严谨的理性;你抓住她的骨(逻辑)和肉(词汇),就抓住了她的全部。
